Payments Giant Fiserv Launches Stablecoin Settlement on Solana

Fiserv's Roughrider Coin is settling interbank payments on Solana for more than 90 North Dakota banks and credit unions.

Fiserv's digital asset platform is live with financial institution clients, with Roughrider Coin becoming the first production stablecoin deployment on the company's system. The dollar-backed coin settles interbank transactions on Solana for a network of more than 90 banks and credit unions in North Dakota.

What Roughrider Coin Settles

Roughrider Coin is designed for bank-to-bank money movement across North Dakota's interbank network. Bank of North Dakota is using Fiserv's issuance, reserve, custody and settlement infrastructure to deploy the coin statewide.

Participating institutions access it through Commercial Center, Fiserv's commercial online banking system. That system already handles traditional interbank transfers, so banks can use the same interface for settlement with Roughrider Coin. The announcement did not disclose transaction volumes, dollar amounts, throughput, fees or the number of transactions processed.

The scale currently disclosed is network participation, not usage. More than 90 banks and credit unions can conduct bank-to-bank transactions with the coin, but the release provides no data showing how often those institutions use it or how much money has moved.

How VersaBank and Fireblocks Fit In

VersaBank issues Roughrider Coin. Its role covers minting, burning, custody and reserve asset management within a nationally regulated framework. Fireblocks provides the digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services.

That structure puts the issuer and infrastructure providers around the coin, but the available announcement does not detail its reserve composition, redemption terms or whether access is formally restricted to bank participants. Those details would determine how closely the token behaves like a regulated settlement instrument and how exposed institutions are to operational or counterparty risks.

What Solana Changes

Roughrider Coin is the payment deployment that gives Solana a role in Fiserv's platform, but the announcement does not show that Solana alone is driving new payment demand. Fiserv did not provide Solana transaction counts, fees, payer addresses or a comparison with other networks.

The immediate change is settlement architecture. A stablecoin designed for interbank movement is being processed on a public blockchain, while banks and credit unions access it through an established online banking system. That gives Solana a production use case in regulated payments, but it does not establish the network as a major source of stablecoin liquidity.

Fiserv also says its broader platform targets corporates, marketplaces and fintechs. Potential uses include stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, treasury automation, tokenized deposits and multi-currency accounts. Those are planned use cases, not evidence that they are active or carrying volume.

The first measurable test will be whether more than 90 North Dakota institutions keep using Roughrider Coin after launch. Without disclosed volumes, transaction counts or settlement costs, the announcement shows a working deployment, not the scale of Solana's payment demand.
