Hypercall's $592M in Options Is a Rounding Error Next to the S&P 500

Hypercall has traded $592 million in options since June, $536 million of it in September, while the S&P 500 options market it targets trades trillions a day.

Hypercall has traded $592 million in options since it went live on 1 June, and $536 million of that landed in September alone, founder Jake Sylvestre wrote in an essay this month. He also supplied the scale himself: $60 million a day is under 1% of what Hyperliquid clears on a normal day, and about 0.002% of daily S&P 500 options notional.

The pitch is the closed cash equity market. Hypercall sells defined-risk options on stocks and crypto, open nights and weekends, with no minimums and no liquidations, settled on Hyperliquid. Its own copy puts it plainly:

Equities sleep. Crypto doesn't, and neither do we. Trade options on stocks and crypto around the clock, settled on Hyperliquid.

Hypercall is a Synapse product, and SpaceX was the first market it opened.

Where the $536 Million Came From

Since launch it has listed options on the S&P 500, Nvidia, Micron, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Alibaba, SanDisk and SpaceX, alongside bitcoin and ether. Nearly all of the volume arrived in one month. September accounted for $536 million of the $592 million lifetime total, and in the week before Sylvestre published his numbers, Hypercall averaged about $60 million a day.

One $7,100 Trade Became 15% of Hyperliquid's S&P 500 Volume

Hypercall publishes case studies from its own trading, and the 23 September one shows how thin the flow behind the headline number is. A trader bought a same-day 7,730/7,710 S&P 500 put spread for $7,100. The market maker on the other side hedged that exposure through Hyperliquid's S&P 500 perps for 15 hours, trading $14.8 million, which was 15% of all S&P 500 perp volume on the venue that day.

SPX closed at 7,706.88, so the spread expired in the money and the trader's gain came to $53,600. Hypercall says the hedge reached 2,084 times the premium paid. From 15:00 UTC to expiry, it says, Hyperliquid rejected about 180 of the maker's sell orders an hour for insufficient margin, and the hedge stayed stuck near 275 units sold. Across 1,988 perp fills, Hypercall's tally of fees paid is $1,333.

Hypercall puts the entire Hyperliquid S&P 500 perp market at about $190 million of volume that day. One hedged trade from one market maker was a sixth of it.

The S&P 500 Share Does Not Feed HYPE

On Hypercall, a buyer's maximum loss is the premium paid, per the platform's app. Sellers take premium up front and owe the contract's final value, and short positions need collateral to meet maintenance margin and can be closed automatically.

Settlement is in cash, in USDC, and traders post USDC as collateral. None of that routes money into HYPE, so the platform's best month does not by itself create demand for the token.

Bybit Opened the Same Door in September

Bybit took the idea live on 17 September at 20:00 UTC, starting Perp Options with SpaceX and Nvidia as the first underlyings. The contracts are European-style, cash-settled in USDT, carry a multiplier of one and skip a $25,000 minimum. Bybit says the product gives round-the-clock access to US equity options from an existing USDT-funded account, with Tesla, QQQ, SOXL and Micron lined up next.

The $640 Million Figure Has No Page Behind It

A larger number for Hypercall surfaced on 14 October: $640 million in notional volume since June, more than 80% of it from S&P 500 options, with open interest of about $49 million, $47 million of that in S&P 500 options. None of it appears on Hypercall's site, app or research pages, and it sits $48 million above the $592 million the founder published days earlier. Different cut-off dates could explain that, but no published page does. Treat the $640 million, and the 80% split, as unconfirmed.

The Scale Gap Is the Real Question

The market being targeted trades in the trillions. Sylvestre's essay puts S&P 500 index options at 4.6 million contracts a day in August, more than $3 trillion of notional at the index's current level. Every on-chain options venue combined traded $4.4 billion over 30 days and $19.5 billion over the past year, nearly all of it bitcoin and ether.

Against those numbers, $60 million a day is a launch curve, not a trend. Three things would change that: a daily run rate that holds above $60 million after the attention fades, market makers who are named and keep quoting, and a figure of $640 million that Hypercall eventually stands behind on its own pages.
