On January 13th, Chaincode Consulting announced its collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to digitize this historic event. Using the Polygon blockchain, Indian Railways will mint non-fungible token (NFT) tickets, available via the NFTtrace platform. Polygon’s faster throughput and low gas fees make it a natural fit for this large-scale initiative, catering to the millions expected to attend.
Alok Gupta, CEO of Chaincode Consulting, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this partnership: “By leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we’re offering a digital-first experience that honors the traditional significance of the MahaKumbh while introducing innovative engagement through NFTs.”
The MahaKumbh Mela is more than just a festival—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Held once every 144 years, this spiritual gathering attracts global participants, including prominent figures like Richard Gere, David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama. The NFT tickets aim to enhance the experience, making it accessible to a worldwide audience while celebrating India’s rich heritage. The IRCTC’s platform, which sees 1.2 million train tickets booked daily, will facilitate this massive undertaking.
Kumbh Mela, a related event held every 12 years and recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity highlights the festival’s global significance.
