Justin Sun Says Poloniex Is 'Used Solely by the Boss Himself'

Justin Sun called Poloniex 'the world's only exchange used solely by the boss himself.' Protos read it as a wash-trading admission. The post is deleted.

A comic illustration of Justin Sun alone at a crypto exchange counter, one hand on each side of the same trade, with a Poloniex badge and a small stack of TRX coins beside him and a speech bubble reading THE ONLY USER.

Justin Sun described his exchange Poloniex as "the world's only exchange used solely by the boss himself." The line went up on X, and it has since been deleted. Protos read the post as Sun seeming to admit, perhaps jokingly, that most of the trading volume on his exchange comes from him.

That reading is the outlet's. Sun's post, as reproduced, is a joke about running an exchange where he is the only user. The distance between a joke and an admission is the whole story here.

One thing to state up front: X blocks automated fetching, so the post survives only in the form two outlets reproduced it. Its exact thread, timestamp and whether it was a reply or a quote post are not verifiable. Traders Union says the post was deleted by its author.

What Sun's Post Says, in the Words Available

"the world's only exchange used solely by the boss himself"

Traders Union renders the same post as Sun reflecting on running a crypto exchange where he is the sole user, comparing it to other social platforms led by active founders, and calling the solitude extreme but also liberating. That is the outlet's paraphrase, not Sun's wording. Only the line above is quoted directly.

Whether Sun was joking or serious is not settled by anything published so far, and Traders Union's report does not say he clarified or defended the post before removing it. No comment from Poloniex or Sun's representatives on the wash-trading framing appears in the record we could read.

Where the Wash-Trading Charge Comes From

Protos did the arithmetic in its own words: "The only way to create nearly $1 billion dollars in volume on an exchange would be by trading with yourself. In other words, wash trading."

Two things matter about that sentence. It is an assertion by the outlet, not a quote from Sun. And no exchange or market data source was opened for this piece to verify Poloniex's actual volume, or the period the $1 billion covers. The number is Protos's, and it stands unverified here.

The same article notes that wash trading is illegal in most countries because it can be used to manipulate an asset's price, and that it is rarely prosecuted without verifiable proof. Protos also recalls that the SEC previously alleged Sun wash-traded TRX, in a case since dropped. The detail of that case, including the settlement sum that circulated in secondary reports, was not read in a primary filing or court record, so treat that part as unconfirmed.

Why Poloniex's Numbers Draw Scrutiny Anyway

The joke lands where it does because Sun's exchanges already sit under an on-chain spotlight. Protos has documented several strands:

  • HTX's June proof-of-reserves showed roughly a 700 million TRX drop in the TRX held at the exchange, worth about $238 million at then-current prices.
  • An unlabeled address, TEF9ZVUxhmGGffvkf59e2vdLfAG1QCMb7B, votes 928 million TRX for the Poloniex Super Representative.
  • HTX's May 1 proof of reserves listed 71,853.22 stETH, about $135 million at then-prices, and Protos tracked it to an address Etherscan labels Poloniex 9, previously labeled "Justin Sun 4."
  • HTX later moved reserves into a new "ThirdParty" category, and did not respond to Protos's request for the identity of that custodian.
  • HTX has been sanctioned by the European Union and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and TRM Labs said it began rapidly rotating addresses on-chain afterwards, making its holdings harder to identify.

None of this proves wash trading on Poloniex. It explains why a throwaway line about being your own only customer gets read as something more.

The Rumors Around the Same Post

The post arrived in a noisy week. A fake screenshot spread in mainland China claiming UAE media had reported Sun was shot in Dubai. Sun answered it on Sunday with "All is well" and a smiling sunglasses emoji on X. He was travelling between Chicago, where he was promoting TRON ETFs getting listed, and Singapore for a conference. Earlier, Traders Union reports, he highlighted TRON passing $30 trillion in total transfer volume.

The deleted post is gone, and the $1 billion figure at the centre of the wash-trading claim has no public data source behind it yet. Exchange volume it can be checked against, or a reserves report that separates what the exchange holds from what Sun holds, would answer what the post only hinted at.
