Fed Chair Kevin Warsh Warns “We Have Work to Do” on Inflation

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivered a hawkish message at Jackson Hole, putting inflation firmly back at the center of U.S. monetary policy and immediately weighing on Bitcoin and broader risk assets.

Warsh said the Fed’s “predominant focus” should be inflation, warning that policymakers need greater confidence that underlying price pressures are moving toward the central bank’s target.

Warsh Puts Inflation Ahead of Rate-Cut Hopes

Speaking at the Kansas City Fed’s annual Jackson Hole symposium, Warsh acknowledged the persistence of elevated inflation and emphasized the Fed’s responsibility to bring price growth under control.

His message was clear: if inflation is not moving toward the Fed’s objective quickly enough, “we have work to do.”

The comments pushed markets toward a more hawkish outlook. Expectations for a September rate hike climbed to 42% from 35% a day earlier, according to CME FedWatch.

For crypto investors, the shift matters because higher interest rates can reduce liquidity and make riskier assets such as Bitcoin less attractive.

Bitcoin Falls as Markets Reprice Fed Policy

Bitcoin reacted quickly to the remarks, falling toward $78,700 after recently trading above $80,000.

The move comes after Bitcoin’s strong August recovery, which had been supported partly by expectations of a more favorable macroeconomic environment.

Bessent and Warsh Face a Policy Tension

Warsh’s comments also come amid an unusual debate over long-term Treasury yields.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that the government could intervene in the bond market to help reduce pressure on longer-dated yields. Warsh, meanwhile, has favored allowing market forces to play a greater role in determining interest rates.

That creates a potentially important policy tension: efforts to lower long-term borrowing costs could support financial markets, while a stronger Fed focus on inflation could keep monetary policy restrictive.

For Bitcoin and other risk assets, the direction of rates, liquidity and the dollar could therefore become increasingly important.

Jackson Hole has once again delivered a market-moving message. For now, Warsh’s priority is clear: inflation comes first, and markets are beginning to price the risk that interest rates may stay higher for longer.
