LayerZero Faces 8 Monthly ZRO Unlocks as December Fee-Switch Vote Nears

LayerZero has about eight monthly ZRO unlocks remaining, with the next 23.6 million-token release due October 20. A December fee-switch vote could add a new ZRO buyback and burn mechanism.

LayerZero (ZRO) is heading into an important period for its token supply.

The project has about eight monthly unlocks remaining, with each release adding roughly 23.3 million ZRO to the market. The next major unlock is scheduled for October 20, 2026, while the final scheduled release is expected in May 2027.

At the same time, LayerZero is preparing for another fee-switch vote in December 2026.

The two events create an important balance for ZRO. Unlocks can increase available supply, while an approved fee switch could create a mechanism to buy back and burn ZRO.

ZRO's Next Unlock Comes on October 20

LayerZero's next scheduled token unlock is set for October 20.

DefiLlama currently estimates the release at about 23.63 million ZRO, split between 10.63 million ZRO for core contributors and 13 million for strategic partners. The release represents roughly 5.9% of the current circulating supply.

The difference between the roughly 23.3 million monthly figure and the 23.63 million current estimate comes from the specific allocation data used by different tracking services.

The important point is that another sizable batch of ZRO is scheduled to enter circulation.

An unlock does not automatically mean those tokens will be sold. Recipients can hold, stake or otherwise use their tokens. However, a larger circulating supply can create additional selling pressure if some holders decide to take profits.

That makes the October release an important event for traders watching ZRO's recent recovery.

Eight Monthly Unlocks Remain

The October release is not a one-time event.

LayerZero's remaining scheduled unlocks continue on a monthly basis, with releases expected around the 20th of each month. The final major scheduled unlock is expected by May 2027.

This means the market could continue dealing with regular supply increases for several more months.

The schedule matters because ZRO's circulating supply is still well below its maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. DefiLlama currently shows roughly 399 million ZRO in circulation.

For traders, the question is therefore not simply whether ZRO has strong demand. It is whether demand can keep pace with the tokens being released.

LayerZero Is Already Buying Back ZRO

There is also a source of demand working against the scheduled unlocks.

LayerZero's Foundation says revenue from Stargate is being used for ZRO buybacks. Its official tracker currently shows more than 2.37 million ZRO purchased, with a total cost basis of about $3.33 million through August.

LayerZero has continued making purchases since then.

The latest reported purchase was covered recently by Altcoin Buzz, with LayerZero buying another 162,000 ZRO worth about $347,000. The purchase took reported cumulative buybacks to roughly 2.54 million ZRO.

That creates an interesting setup ahead of the next unlock.

LayerZero is adding tokens to circulation through its vesting schedule while also using ecosystem revenue to purchase ZRO from the market.

December Fee-Switch Vote Could Change the Equation

The bigger potential catalyst is LayerZero's planned December 2026 fee-switch vote.

The fee switch is a governance mechanism that would allow LayerZero to charge an additional protocol fee on messages. If activated, the proceeds would be used to buy back and burn ZRO.

The switch is currently inactive.

LayerZero has already held four fee-switch referendums. The previous votes received strong support among participating voters, but the required quorum was not always reached. The June 2026 referendum also failed to reach quorum, leaving the protocol fee inactive.

The December vote would therefore be important because a successful vote could introduce another direct source of ZRO demand.

It would also be different from the existing Stargate buybacks. The fee switch would tie ZRO buybacks and burns directly to LayerZero protocol activity.

ATLAS Adds Another ZRO Demand Story

LayerZero is also building another potential source of token demand through ATLAS, its infrastructure for trading, clearing and settlement across financial markets.

LayerZero says 75% of the economics remaining after trading-venue rebates will go toward buying and burning ZRO, while 25% will go to market creators. Trading venues can also stake ZRO to qualify for higher fee rebates.

This gives ZRO several potential demand mechanisms at different stages.

Stargate revenue is already funding buybacks. The protocol fee switch could add another buy-and-burn mechanism if approved. ATLAS could eventually create additional demand if its trading infrastructure generates meaningful activity.

However, these mechanisms should not be treated as guaranteed offsets to the unlock schedule.

What ZRO Traders Should Watch

The October 20 unlock is the immediate supply event.

After that, monthly releases will continue into 2027. Traders will therefore need to watch how ZRO performs around each unlock rather than treating October as a single isolated event.

The December fee-switch vote could become the next major event.

If the vote passes and the protocol fee is activated, LayerZero would gain a new mechanism for converting network activity into ZRO buybacks and burns. If quorum is missed again, the protocol fee would remain inactive.

That makes the next few months important for ZRO.

LayerZero is entering a period where scheduled token supply is increasing while the project is also building several mechanisms designed to create demand for ZRO.

For now, the October unlock is the clearest near-term supply risk. The December fee-switch vote could become the more important long-term catalyst.

The key question is whether LayerZero's growing ecosystem activity and token buyback mechanisms can absorb the steady stream of new ZRO entering the market through May 2027.
