How do you read the crypto heatmap?

Each tile is one of the 30 largest coins by market cap. Colour shows its price change over the last 24 hours: green for up, red for down, in three strengths (0.5% to 2%, 2% to 5%, and 5% or more). A coin that moved less than 0.5% either way is left uncoloured.

Hover over a tile, or focus the map and use the arrow keys, to read each coin’s price and change.

Why aren’t the tiles sized exactly by market cap?

As of 13:25 UTC, Bitcoin alone is about 62% of these 30 coins’ combined market cap. Sized strictly by value, it would fill most of the map and the smaller coins would be too thin to read.

So tiles are sized by market-cap tier instead: $1T and up, $200B to $1T, $50B to $200B, $10B to $50B, and under $10B. Each tier gets twice the area of the one below.

What does a mostly red or mostly green map tell you?

How broad a move is. Crypto prices tend to move together, so a map that is nearly all one colour usually means the whole market is moving, often following Bitcoin. A mixed map means coins are moving on their own news.

Where do the numbers come from?

Prices, market caps and 24-hour changes come from CoinGecko’s top-100 list, refreshed every 15 minutes while you have the page open. The 24-hour change is rolling: it compares the price now with the price 24 hours ago, not with midnight. The full list is on crypto prices today.

Questions

How many cryptocurrencies are up today?

23 of the 30 largest cryptocurrencies by market cap are up over the last 24 hours and 7 are down (as of 13:25 UTC).

Which large cryptocurrency moved the most today?

Among the 30 largest, Zcash (ZEC) +14.71% over the last 24 hours (as of 13:25 UTC).

What is a crypto heatmap?

A crypto heatmap shows many coins at once as coloured tiles: green for coins that rose, red for coins that fell, with stronger colour for bigger moves. Larger tiles are larger coins, so you can see in one look whether the whole market or only a corner of it is moving.

Why are some tiles not coloured?

Their price moved less than 0.5% either way in 24 hours. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are built to hold $1, so they usually sit in this band.

How often does the crypto heatmap update?

The prices come from CoinGecko and refresh every 15 minutes while the page is open. The page itself is rebuilt every hour.
