The latest big name to express its metaverse ambitions is U.S. shipping behemoth United Parcel Service. Therefore, those large brown UPS trucks could be seen rumbling down the streets of the digital world soon.
On April 11, UPS filed for several trademarks related to the metaverse. The trademark filings to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office suggest that the firm wants to take operations into the virtual world.
Furthermore, the filings are for goods and services including non-fungible tokens (NFTs), virtual goods, and virtual retail shipping.

Virtual Shipping
If more people are planning to spend more time in the metaverse, they will need their deliveries there. Additionally, UPS plans to offer virtual clothing, packages, parcels, labels, bar codes, and sports collectibles.
Trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis commented:
“Clearly, UPS sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademarks and brand for the virtual economy that will dominate it.”
UPS expects to become a major player in the virtual economy, the lawyer stated. It marks the beginning of a new trend of NFT and metaverse filings from the shipping, logistics, and the package delivery sector.
The number of filings for this sector is expected to increase in the next 12 months, said Kondoudis. This is due to the increased competition among brands for metaverse exposure.
Additionally, the 114-year-old company is taking steps to protect its “UPS” brand in the physical and virtual world.
Big Names Into the Metaverse
Other brands from the fast food, fashion, music, technology, and entertainment sectors have also recently filed for metaverse-related trademarks.
Earlier this month, financial services and credit card giant MasterCard filed for 15 NFT and metaverse trademark applications.
McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s have also made moves to register their own brands in the metaverse this year.
Additionally, clothing labels such as Under Armour have also recently filed for similar patents. These include retail stores with virtual goods, virtual clothing, footwear, headwear, and sporting goods.
