Morgan Stanley Pushes Tokenized Equities to Q1 2027

Morgan Stanley now expects to support tokenized equities on its Trajectory Cross trading system in Q1 2027, moving past its earlier second-half 2026 target.

Morgan Stanley now expects to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in the first quarter of 2027, moving past the second-half 2026 target it set in March. Amy Oldenburg, the bank's head of digital asset strategy, gave the new window at TOKEN2049 in Singapore and said Morgan Stanley is still building the technology the service needs.

The plan under the date has not changed. The support would run on Trajectory Cross, the alternative trading system the bank already operates for traditional equities, exchange-traded funds and American Depositary Receipts. Morgan Stanley describes it as support for tokenized securities on existing infrastructure, not the launch of a separate crypto exchange.

Q1 2027 Replaces a Second-Half 2026 Target

The earlier timetable was disclosed by Oldenburg at the Digital Asset Summit in March, when she discussed bringing blockchain-based securities into the bank's existing trading operations. She now describes Q1 2027 as a more realistic target than the one she gave then. The delay covers one piece of the business, the venue that executes trades, and not the broader set of digital asset projects the bank has running.

The Bank Says the Product Comes First

Oldenburg's explanation is short. "We need product in order to be able to support them within the ATS."

A fuller transcription of the same comment adds the demand side: "We need a product in order to be able to support it within the ATS. And there really isn't any client demand because the product itself doesn't exist. So we just need a bit more time." The two transcripts differ in wording, not in substance: Morgan Stanley wants the instrument in place before it lights up the venue.

For readers tracking who moves first, that ordering is the point. An exchange can list a tokenized share only after someone issues one, and the bank is not issuing yet.

What Has Not Been Announced

The revised target arrived without a confirmed launch date, a list of eligible stocks, or any statement that tokenized equity trading is already live on the platform. Also unannounced: which blockchain networks the service will use, and whether every customer eligible for Trajectory Cross would qualify for the tokenized product. The date and format of the TOKEN2049 interview, whether a recorded session or a media conversation, is not stated in the reports we read.

Oldenburg's $3 Trillion to $10 Trillion Forecast

Oldenburg put the tokenized real-world asset market at between $3 trillion and $10 trillion by 2030, and when asked about the range, said: "We'll definitely be within that range without question."

The base it has to climb from is small. Tokenized real-world assets stood at roughly $39.19 billion as of October 12, per RWA.xyz, which puts the $10 trillion case at about 255 times growth. That figure comes from RWA.xyz data reported secondhand and has not been checked against RWA.xyz directly.

She named private shares, structured notes and investment funds as the areas she finds most promising, on the argument that those products carry heavy administrative work that blockchain could strip out. She framed the bank's objective as "raising, allocating, and managing capital onchain", and the longer-term outcome as "the securitization of everything". Elsewhere banks are making the same bet, from custody to execution, as Kraken's co-CEO described in his own read on where tokenized equities fit.

DTCC's October Launch and the Regulatory Queue

The nearer catalyst Oldenburg is watching sits outside Morgan Stanley. DTCC's tokenization service is due to launch at the end of October, following a July 15 announcement in which DTCC said more than 30 firms took part in production transactions using tokenized representations of assets held at the Depository Trust Company. The transactions covered securities lending, collateral pledges, equity transfers and US Treasury repurchase agreements, and the service followed a December 2025 SEC no-action letter on tokenizing assets in DTC custody.

The participant counts do not reconcile across reports. One account describes a May 4 announcement of more than 50 companies in a working group and July 15 production transactions involving approximately 40 firms, while the July 15 item is described elsewhere as more than 30 participating firms. We cannot settle which figure covers which event.

On the bank's own build, the Digital Asset Lab is testing tokenized deposits, digital currencies, money-market funds and DeFi vaults, and Morgan Stanley is developing proprietary wallet infrastructure for customers holding tokenized assets. The OCC granted preliminary conditional approval on June 18 for Morgan Stanley Digital Trust, a proposed national trust bank in Purchase, New York, covering custody, purchases, sales, swaps, transfers, fiduciary staking and collateral administration. The conditions require at least $50 million in tier 1 capital, at least half in eligible liquid assets, and a liquid-asset reserve covering 180 days of operating expenses in the first three years.

Two regulatory items run alongside. The SEC introduced temporary exemptions on September 17 for certain platforms trading tokenized stocks, permitting qualifying venues to use approved automated market maker arrangements. Those exemptions are not an approval of Morgan Stanley's ATS service. Oldenburg also flagged the GENIUS Act taking effect in January, with questions still open for institutions on Fed permissions and the CLARITY bill. She said the bank is exploring perpetual futures and prediction markets without committing to launch anything there.

The last hard number the bank has put on its own roadmap is Q1 2027. The next date that does not depend on Morgan Stanley is DTCC's October launch, which will show how much tokenized settlement infrastructure is actually running before the bank switches anything on.
