NEAR Recovers $3.8M From Hack as Token2049 Puts Intents in Focus

NEAR gains 8.1% after the attacker behind the $3.8 million NEAR Intents exploit returns the stolen funds, while Token2049 puts the network's AI and Intents strategy in the spotlight.

NEAR Protocol is bouncing back after a difficult week for NEAR Intents.

The NEAR token gained 8.1% as the attacker behind the $3.8 million NEAR Intents exploit returned the stolen funds in full. The recovery removes the immediate financial loss from the incident, while attention around NEAR's Intents and AI infrastructure is growing ahead of Token2049 in Singapore.

The recovery also comes as NEAR prepares for a visible presence at Token2049, where co-founder Illia Polosukhin is scheduled to speak about AI and finance. The event could give the network another opportunity to highlight its push into cross-chain trading and AI infrastructure.

NEAR gets the stolen funds back

NEAR Intents suffered an exploit on October 1 after a bug was found in the interaction between its Omni deposit and withdrawal infrastructure and the NEAR Intents smart contract.

The incident initially resulted in about $3.8 million in stolen funds and forced the protocol to temporarily pause services and restrict deposits and withdrawals across several networks. The vulnerability was patched, and the team said affected users would be fully compensated.

The recovery came shortly afterward.

NEAR Intents general manager Alex Shevchenko said the attacker returned the entire $3.8 million after the team identified the person responsible and gave them 48 hours to return the funds. Onchain data showed roughly 34.6 BTC arriving at the recovery address in several transfers.

The incident is now closed from a financial perspective, although the return of the funds does not remove the need for a detailed post-mortem on how the vulnerability occurred.

NEAR Intents remains a major part of the story

The hack targeted NEAR Intents rather than the underlying NEAR blockchain itself.

NEAR Intents is designed to simplify cross-chain transactions. Users specify what they want to accomplish, while independent solvers compete to execute the transaction across different networks. The system has processed more than $30 billion in cumulative volume across more than 30 blockchains.

That infrastructure has also become increasingly relevant to NEAR's broader ecosystem strategy.

Earlier this month, NEAR Intents helped block a roughly $50 million swap attempt linked to the Bitget hacker, although a smaller amount still made it through. That episode highlighted another side of the platform: its ability to identify and restrict suspicious cross-chain activity.

Altcoin Buzz previously covered how NEAR Intents blocked a $50 million swap route linked to the Bitget attack, showing why the protocol has become an important piece of NEAR's cross-chain infrastructure.

Token2049 brings attention back to NEAR

The timing of the recovery is also notable because NEAR is heading into Token2049 Singapore with a strong focus on AI, privacy and cross-chain infrastructure.

NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin is scheduled to appear at the event for sessions covering private AI and the relationship between AI and crypto. NEAR is also hosting community and privacy-focused events around the conference.

This gives NEAR an opportunity to shift the conversation away from the recent exploit and back toward its longer-term strategy.

The network has increasingly positioned NEAR Intents and NEAR AI as two parts of the same vision. Intents handle cross-chain execution, while NEAR AI focuses on private and verifiable AI infrastructure for autonomous agents.

That narrative has already attracted attention. Altcoin Buzz recently reported on three NEAR ecosystem projects gaining attention as the protocol expands into Intents, privacy and tokenized assets.

AI and developer interest remain key

NEAR's AI strategy is becoming increasingly important to its positioning.

The network's developer infrastructure now combines chain abstraction, cross-chain execution and AI-focused tooling. NEAR says its developer stack is designed to support AI applications, autonomous agents and applications that need to move assets across multiple chains.

NEAR AI is separately developing private inference infrastructure that uses confidential computing to keep AI workloads and data protected. The broader roadmap combines this with NEAR Intents to support an emerging agent economy in which AI systems can transact and interact across blockchain networks.

That gives investors another narrative to watch beyond the token's short-term price movement.

Can NEAR sustain the recovery?

The 8.1% gain suggests the market is absorbing the hack recovery positively, but it is too early to say the returned funds alone caused the entire move.

The removal of a $3.8 million loss reduces one immediate source of uncertainty. At the same time, Token2049 provides a high-profile stage for NEAR's AI and Intents strategy, while continued developer activity could give the network a stronger fundamental narrative.

For now, the recovery has turned an otherwise damaging security incident into a more manageable setback. The bigger test will be whether NEAR can convert the attention around Intents and AI into sustained usage, liquidity and developer adoption.

The $3.8 million is back. Now NEAR has to show that its broader ecosystem can keep moving forward.
