Phantom Wallet Enables Gasless Swaps on Solana

The update lets users pay transaction fees with the token they’re swapping. They no longer need Solana’s native token, SOL, in their wallet.

For users who’ve hit a dead end trying to swap tokens without enough SOL for gas fees, the Phantom wallet now offers a solution.

Gas Fees, Solved: Phantom Eases Swaps with Smart Mobile Update

Traditionally, users need a small amount of SOL to cover network fees for any transaction on the Solana blockchain. But with gasless swaps, Phantom is flipping that script. Now, if your wallet doesn’t have enough SOL to cover a swap, Phantom will automatically activate gasless mode and deduct the fees from the tokens you’re trading.

There are some basic requirements: the feature only kicks in when your SOL balance is too low to cover fees, and it currently supports trades of $75 or more. At launch, it’s exclusive to Phantom’s mobile app, but desktop support could follow if demand grows.

This small but powerful tweak addresses one of the biggest UX friction points in DeFi. “Running out of gas” has long been a blocker for first-time users and seasoned traders alike. Now, that pain point is smoothed over—at least for mobile users on Solana.

Part of a Bigger Trend in Wallet UX

Gasless transactions are not new to blockchain, but their adoption is picking up speed. Ethereum-based wallets like MetaMask have explored similar solutions using ERC-4337 “Account Abstraction,” and Polygon’s ecosystem also features gasless dApps.

The timing of this feature aligns with a broader push for crypto apps to feel as intuitive as traditional fintech. As of Q1-2025, Phantom has over 3 million active users, and its focus on usability has made it a go-to wallet for the Solana crowd. With gasless swaps, it continues to chip away at the hurdles preventing mass adoption.
