Pi Network Schedules Protocol 28 Mainnet Upgrade for October 16

Pi Network plans to activate Protocol 28 on Mainnet on October 16, with node operators required to upgrade by October 13.

Pi Network has scheduled its Protocol 28 upgrade for Mainnet on October 16, following the rollout of the new protocol version to Testnet. The update focuses on improving transaction-data handling and giving developers safer ways to manage smart contracts and application data.

The Pi Core Team has also set October 13 as the deadline for node operators to upgrade their software. The update is part of the network's ongoing infrastructure development, following the completion of Protocol 27 on Mainnet.

Protocol 28 targets transaction delays and smart contracts

Protocol 28 introduces changes to how Pi Network handles delays involving transaction data. It also allows developers to upgrade groups of smart contracts together and modify stored application data more safely as their applications evolve.

These improvements are intended to make application maintenance easier for developers building on Pi Network. Updating multiple contracts together can simplify maintenance, while safer data changes can help applications evolve without relying on more complicated manual processes.

The upgrade is primarily an infrastructure change. Its immediate focus is the network's technical capabilities rather than a new feature for everyday PI holders.

Node operators face an October 13 deadline

Pi Network has asked all node operators to upgrade to Protocol 28 by October 13, three days before the planned Mainnet activation.

The protocol has already moved to Testnet, where the new version can be evaluated before the scheduled Mainnet rollout. This follows the successful completion of Protocol 27 on Mainnet.

The October 16 date is a planned upgrade milestone, not a new Mainnet launch. Pi Network's Mainnet is already operating, and Protocol 28 represents another step in its continuing software upgrades.

What the upgrade means for Pi's ecosystem

Protocol 28 adds to the technical foundation that Pi developers can use as they build and maintain applications. Improvements to transaction-data handling and smart-contract management can help support more complex applications over time.

However, the upgrade alone does not establish that application usage, developer activity or demand for PI will increase. Those outcomes depend on how developers use the new capabilities and whether applications attract sustained activity after deployment.

The immediate milestones are therefore practical ones: node operators must complete their updates by October 13, followed by the scheduled Mainnet upgrade on October 16.

PI holders watch the next network milestone

The Protocol 28 rollout gives Pi Network another defined step in its infrastructure roadmap. For developers and node operators, the focus is on compatibility and readiness ahead of the Mainnet activation.

For PI holders, the key distinction is between a technical upgrade and measurable growth across the ecosystem. Protocol 28 expands the network's development capabilities, while longer-term adoption will depend on the applications and activity that follow.

With the node deadline approaching, the next important development is whether the network completes the planned Mainnet rollout on October 16.
