How to Claim Cardano’s Midnight Glacier Token Airdrop

Did you hear that! Glacier Airdrop to 37 million accounts across 8 major networks Bitcoin, Ethereum, Cardano, XRP and more. To know the rest of the 4 networks, you need to read the article. Well, the Glacier Airdrop for Midnight on Cardano is a big event. But there will be a 60-day window to claim it, and if you miss it, you lose it. In this article, I will explain to you how to find out if you are eligible for the airdrop or not. 

I will show you, without any hassle or confusion, how to claim this Midnight airdrop. And if you didn’t qualify, I still have a little secret. I’m sharing the exact steps that turn a potential missed opportunity into a real win. So, hang on, stay focused, and see how this airdrop claim works. Get ready to beat the clock and claim what’s yours!

Are You Eligible for the Midnight Airdrop

Let’s first look at the qualifying criteria for this airdrop. You need to have at least $100 worth of tokens of each of the following coins, in self-custody. For example, MetaMask or Cardano-compatible wallets like Yori or Nami.

• $ADA
• $BTC
• $ETH
• $XRP
• $SOL
• $BNB
• $AVAX
• $BAT
  

So, not on an exchange. The primary focus is on holders of eligible tokens in self-custody wallets. It seems that the snapshot has already been taken on 11th June. So, if you held any of the above tokens worth $100 in your self-custody wallet, you qualify for the airdrop.

In case you did not qualify, I will share some secrets to get your share of airdrop tokens. The token distribution is multiphase. There are three ‘Claim phases‘ and a ‘Redemption period’. The initial claim phase lasts for 60 days. 

How to Claim the Midnight Airdrop

Here’s something you need to know before I start to explain how to claim the Midnight Airdrop. Right now, nobody knows when the claiming period starts. So, that’s a great start, isn’t it? 

But not to worry. Charles Hoskinson mentioned that he will reveal more details come early August. Hoskinson is, of course, Cardano’s CEO. As it happens, he’s a speaker at the Rare Evo conference between 6th and 10th August in Vegas. So, most likely, he will share more information during that event. What I do know is that the airdrop will take place before November this year.

The airdrop is for $NIGHT tokens. However, there’s a second token on Midnight, which has the $DUST ticker. $NIGHT is the utility token that powers the Midnight ecosystem. It generates $DUST, which is a shielded and renewable network resource. There are 24 billion $NIGHT tokens. It’s disinflationary, it’s not expendable, and it won’t be burned. You can use it on the Cardano and Midnight chains.

$DUST shields transactions and doesn’t expose any metadata. This is the privacy part. Once used, it’s destroyed. As long as there are $NIGHT balances, it’s renewed into perpetuity. It’s also non-transferable. So, so much for the tokens.

I will cover everything about the airdrop here. This includes how you can claim $NIGHT in case you didn’t qualify for the initial drop.

Claim Phase 1: Glacier Drop

During all three claim phases, there are three steps to follow.

1. Make a claim. You need to claim your $NIGHT allocation. 
2. Your allocation needs to thaw. Initial claims are frozen or locked. 
3. Redeem your allocation. That’s the last step before you receive your tokens. See the picture below.

Here’s how Midnight distributes the airdrop. This is proportional to how many tokens you hold. 

• 50% goes to $ADA holders. 
• 20% goes to $BTC holders.
• 30% goes to holders of the other 6 coins. This is in proportion to their relative value in $USD. 

The Claiming Process

So, now let’s take a look at the claiming process.

• Access the $NIGHT claim portal.

This will be the official UI (user interface) to claim your $NIGHT allocation. You can use this UI for phases 1 and 2, and for the redemption of your tokens. Midnight will announce the URL of this page in due time. 

• Enter an Origin address

That’s the wallet address where you hold your eligible tokens. This would be one or more non-Cardano addresses or one or more $ADA addresses. These Origin addresses determine if you’re eligible for the Glacier Airdrop. That’s the first airdrop phase.

• Enter a Destination address

Here you can redeem your $NIGHT allocation. This must be a CIP-30 compatible Cardano address. This needs to be a brand new, unused Cardano address! Make sure that it doesn’t have a transaction history. However, you can use one Destination address for various $NIGHT claims. You can use this for phases 1 and 2.

• Accept the terms and conditions

You need to accept the terms and conditions to claim your allocation. 

• Sign your unique claim message and complete the claim

This proves ownership of your Origin addresses and allows you to complete the claim.

Any unclaimed tokens during these 60 days will go to Phase 2, the Scavenger Mine phase. That’s where anybody can take part. More on this in a moment.

Claim Phase 2: Scavenger Mine

The Scavenger Mine phase is open to anyone. So, if you missed the original airdrop because you didn’t qualify, here’s your chance. The only thing you need is a computer. You will need computational power to solve tasks. There’s no need for any special hardware. Anyone with a computer can take part. 

All the unclaimed tokens from the original Glacier Airdrop are now up for grabs. So, in case you took part in the Glacier Airdrop, you can use the same Destination address. However, make sure it’s still unused. Your share of unclaimed tokens is in proportion to the computing power you contribute. 

After this claim is over, the Midnight mainnet will launch. That’s also when all redemption periods start. Your claimed tokens begin to thaw. More on this in a moment. This also opens phase 3, the Lost-and-Found phase. That is, if conditions are met. So, let’s look at phase 3.

Claim Phase 3: Lost-and-Found

Lost-and-found is the third and also the last claim phase. Dates are still to be confirmed. In case you were eligible but missed the first 60-day claim phase, this is for you. During this phase, you claim a small part of your original allocation.

However, you won’t be able to use the $NIGHT Claim Portal. You will need to deal directly with the smart contract that holds your allocation. I assume that in due time, instructions will be available. On the other hand, there’s no thaw period for Lost-and-Found claims. So, you can claim them immediately. After four years, any unclaimed tokens will go to the on-chain Treasury.

Redemption Period

There’s a redemption of 360 days. But no reason to start panicking, you can redeem your tokens during four periods. So, during the redemption period, your tokens thaw. Once they’re thawed, you can claim them. 

Every 90 days, you claim 25% of your allocation. The first claim is on a random day, between days 1 and 90. After that, each claim follows a 90-day cycle. The last three unlock dates depend on your first unlock day. See the schedule in the picture below.

Once a thawed share unlocks, you can claim it. You can also wait for the last thawing period and claim all your tokens at once. After the very last tokens thaw, the redemption page stays open for 90 days.

To redeem your share, 

• Go to the $NIGHT Claim Portal. 
• Connect your Destination addresses.
• Check if your token did indeed thaw.
• Redeem your share. 

You will need to pay a small fee in $ADA for this, so make sure you have a small amount of $ADA on that address.
