Seven UK Banks Complete First Real Transactions Using Tokenized Pounds

Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest and Santander completed the first interbank tokenized deposit transactions on Quant's DLT platform.

Seven of the U.K.'s biggest banks have completed the first customer transactions using tokenized pound deposits on a shared platform, in a trial called the Great British Tokenized Deposit initiative. The platform was built by Quant, a distributed ledger technology provider.

The participating banks are Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Monzo, Nationwide, NatWest and Santander. The transactions tested included remortgage payments and a consumer purchase, the kind of money movement that normally shows up on your bank statement without anyone thinking about how it got there.

For anyone following the U.K. banking story, this is the moment the test benches got real customers attached to them. The point was to see whether regulated bank money can move in tokenized form between institutions and into retail payments, without losing the protections that come with a normal deposit.

How tokenized deposits differ from stablecoins

Tokenized deposits are digital records of money you already hold in a bank account. They remain a liability of the issuing bank, the same institution that holds your current account, and keep the protections attached to a conventional deposit.

That distinction matters for the stablecoin debate running in parallel. A stablecoin is a token issued by a non-bank against reserves the holder has no direct claim on. A tokenized deposit is your bank balance in a different wrapper, with the same legal status and the same deposit protections.

What the seven banks actually did

The seven banks ran the trial on Quant's distributed ledger platform. Gilbert Verdian, founder and CEO of Quant, said tokenized deposits "have the potential to play a key role in the evolution of digital money and payments in the U.K. and beyond."

The transactions themselves were small in scale but large in signal. Remortgage payments and a consumer purchase show money moving across separate institutions through one shared ledger, the line every earlier U.K. bank DLT pilot has stopped short of.

The regulator angle worth tracking

The trial lands while the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority are preparing the U.K. financial system for tokenization and longer settlement hours. Regulators are also weighing stablecoins for institutional settlement, with the two tracks running in parallel and competing for the same space.

Lucy Rigby, the economic secretary to the Treasury, said the live transactions "show how tokenized deposits can deliver practical, real-world benefits, contingent payments that give customers greater control over their money."

Next stop: digital asset settlement

The group will test the settlement of digital assets using tokenized customer money next. That step pulls tokenized deposits out of the bank-only world and into the asset settlement layer where the crypto industry already operates.

The pilot also differs from a recent Lloyds effort to use tokenized deposits to buy a tokenized gilt within its own arrangement. The new work is several banks across one shared system, not one bank on its own rails.

Neither the total value moved nor the number of customers involved has been disclosed. Several of the seven banks have not commented publicly on the trial beyond the joint announcement.
