Sherrod Brown Returns to Senate Race After Crypto Spent $40M Against Him

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown is running again in Ohio against Republican Jon Husted, a crypto ally. Crypto PACs spent $40M to defeat him in 2024.

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) launched a 2026 Senate campaign Monday for the seat held by Republican Jon Husted, who took the office after JD Vance became vice president. Brown's opponent is widely described in crypto-industry coverage as a crypto ally. The race comes four months after crypto's marquee 2025 legislative priority collapsed in the Senate, and seven months after the industry's biggest super PAC affiliates closed their books on a $290 million 2024 spending spree.

Crypto spent roughly $40 million to defeat Brown last cycle. Defend American Jobs, the Republican-aligned affiliate of the super PAC Fairshake, spent about $40.1 million supporting Bernie Moreno in Ohio, per FEC Schedule A filings reviewed by Fintech Weekly. Moreno, a self-described crypto enthusiast, defeated Brown in the most expensive Senate race in the country, with both sides spending more than $500 million, The Hill reported. None of Defend American Jobs' two most-run Ohio ads mentioned crypto directly, according to The Dispatch.

The industry's public posture was blunt. Senate Banking Chair Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium: "Thank you to all of y'all for getting rid of Sherrod Brown. Literally, the industry put Bernie Moreno in the Senate." Coinbase-backed advocacy group Stand With Crypto labels Brown "strongly against crypto," though it noted his recent comments were "somewhat pro-crypto."

The CLARITY Act just failed

The race lands as the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, the most comprehensive crypto bill ever to pass a single chamber, lies in legislative limbo. The bill passed the House on July 17, 2025, by 294-134, with no House Republican voting against it. On Sept. 15, 2026, it failed a Senate cloture vote 49-50, well short of the 60 needed.

Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of CLARITY's lead Republican negotiators, warned on Sept. 6 that the "next real opportunity" for the bill could slip to 2030. The remaining dispute is over ethics provisions.

What Senate Banking has to do with it

Brown chaired the Senate Banking Committee until 2025. Industry advocates blamed him for blocking long-sought crypto legislation in that role. Tim Scott now holds the gavel. If Democrats win the Senate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren is widely expected to take it.

That committee seat is the policy stakes of the Ohio race. Warren's chairmanship would tilt Banking toward enforcement and away from industry-favored market-structure legislation. Brown's return, if paired with a Democratic majority, would put him back in line for a senior Banking slot, though not necessarily the chair.

Crypto's 2026 war chest is already funded

Fairshake and its two partisan affiliates, Defend American Jobs for Republicans and Protect Progress for Democrats, spent roughly $290 million combined in 2024, per NBC News review of FEC filings. About $130 million of that went to House and Senate races, and the network won roughly 80 percent of the 68 races it engaged in.

The 2026 cycle money is already on the books. FEC Schedule A filings reviewed by Fintech Weekly show Ripple Labs gave Fairshake $48 million, Coinbase gave $33.1 million directly plus another $19.4 million through exchange infrastructure, and Andreessen Horowitz's AH Capital Management gave $23.8 million. On Dec. 10, 2025, Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz each added $11.9 million of their own money.

The Hill also reports Coinbase gave $25 million and Andreessen Horowitz $23 million to Fairshake for the 2026 cycle before the 2024 votes had even been counted.

What remains unconfirmed

A New York Times report from Sept. 21, 2026, described roughly $30 million in planned crypto-PAC spending against Brown's comeback, but the underlying article could not be opened for verification. The specific PAC or PACs that would deploy the funds, the policy stance that triggered the spending and the timeline are not confirmed.

Two newer crypto PACs, Digital Freedom Fund and Fellowship PAC, have broken from Fairshake's bipartisan model to focus on pro-crypto Republicans, but neither has been confirmed as a participant in any anti-Brown effort. Coinbase, Ripple and Andreessen Horowitz public statements on Brown's 2026 campaign were not verified by the pages opened for this brief.
