Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has sold 1,638 Bitcoin (BTC) worth about $104.7 million. The sale happened between July 27 and August 2, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The company also raised $290.6 million by selling nearly 3.01 million MSTR shares. This time, Strategy did not use the money to buy more Bitcoin. Instead, it focused on improving its financial position.

Strategy Still Holds More Than 842,000 BTC

Even after the sale, Strategy remains the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder.

The company owns 842,138 BTC, equal to just over 4% of Bitcoin's total supply. Its Bitcoin treasury is worth more than $57 billion at current market prices.

The latest treasury data also shows a 3.5% Bitcoin Yield Year-to-Date (YTD).

Why Did Strategy Sell Bitcoin?

Strategy used the money for three main purposes.

  1. It increased its cash reserve to $4 billion.
  2. It bought back STRC preferred shares.
  3. It sets aside money for future dividend and debt payments.

The company says this cash reserve will help it avoid selling Bitcoin during weak market conditions.

No New Bitcoin Purchases

The latest sale also means Strategy has now gone six straight weeks without buying Bitcoin.

This is the company's longest buying pause since 2024.

Many investors expected another Bitcoin purchase. Instead, Strategy chose to improve its balance sheet before adding more BTC.

STRC Buybacks Continue

Strategy is also trying to support the price of its STRC preferred stock.

Last week, the company spent more than $81 million buying back STRC shares.

The goal is to move STRC closer to its $100 face value. If that happens, Strategy can raise money more easily in future share offerings.

Company executives believe these buybacks will also reduce future dividend costs.

Bitcoin Sales Increase This Year

Strategy has sold Bitcoin several times in 2026.

The company sold:

  • 32 BTC in May
  • 1,363 BTC in late June
  • 2,225 BTC in early July
  • 1,638 BTC in early August

This makes 2026 the company's biggest year for Bitcoin sales since it started buying the cryptocurrency in 2020.

Michael Saylor Still Supports Bitcoin

Some investors worry that Strategy is changing its Bitcoin strategy.

Michael Saylor says that is not the case.

He has explained that Strategy has never promised to hold every Bitcoin forever. Instead, the company expects to remain a net buyer of Bitcoin over the long term.

According to Saylor, selling a small amount of Bitcoin gives Strategy more financial flexibility while keeping its long-term Bitcoin plan intact.

What This Means

Strategy is taking a more balanced approach to managing its money.

The company still owns more than 842,000 BTC, making it the largest public corporate Bitcoin holder.

At the same time, it is building a larger cash reserve and supporting its preferred stock program.

For now, Bitcoin buying has paused. However, Strategy says it still sees Bitcoin as the foundation of its long-term treasury strategy.
