Sui Foundation Invests $30M as DATA Network Retires Its Chain

The Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in DATA Network. The AI data protocol's Trace registry will run natively on Sui, and its own chain will be retired.

The Sui Foundation is investing $30 million in DATA Network, and DATA Network is moving onto Sui. Its Trace registry will run natively on Sui, and its independent chain will be retired. The two foundations announced the plan together.

The part worth slowing down for is small. Trace is an onchain registry for AI training data, launched in June. It logs that a file was contributed, when it arrived, and who registered it, so a lab can later show where its training material came from. Right now that record is an audit trail. Under the deal, Walrus, Sui's data platform with integrity proofs anchored on Sui, becomes the default storage layer for applications operated by the DATA Foundation. Trace then gains the ability to hold an encrypted, immutable copy of the contributed file itself.

What Trace Actually Does

A registry entry answers one question: where did this data come from, and did anyone agree to it? Today, a Trace record proves that a file was registered and when, and the hash is generated from metadata an application supplied.

Keeping the file changes that. With the file held on Walrus, the hash can be regenerated from the data itself rather than from application-supplied metadata, and any later processing of the file can be checked against the original. The record stops being a claim about a file and becomes a reference guarantee for it.

The scale so far, per the announcement: more than 250 million contributions registered since launch, and over 3 million receipts processed per day on average. Two secondary reports put daily activity ten times higher, at more than 30 million items, and that gap has not been resolved.

Applications already writing to Trace include Kled, described in the announcement as the largest opt-in human data marketplace, with over 1.5 billion records being onboarded, plus Numo and Oto, which license data to frontier AI labs and robotics companies. The "largest" label is the project's own and has not been independently checked.

From Story Protocol to an AI Data Registry

DATA did not start here. It launched in February 2025 as an EVM-compatible Layer 1 chain built for programmable intellectual property and automated licensing. The organisation was then the Story Foundation. It refocused on AI training data in June 2026, and on June 25, 2026 it rebranded as the DATA Foundation, migrating holders of the IP token to the new DATA token one-to-one.

That makes the Sui move the third shape for the same idea. First a chain for licensing intellectual property, then an onchain registry for training data, now a protocol that runs on someone else's chain. Each step kept the part that mattered: a verifiable record of who contributed what.

What the $30 Million Buys

The investment establishes the largest institutional stake in DATA Network for the Sui Foundation, alongside the continuing holdings of PIP Labs and the DATA Foundation. The announcement gives no breakdown of how the money is structured or allocated. Whether it is a token purchase or equity, what price it implies, and what the funds are earmarked for are all unstated.

There is a personnel piece as well. SY Lee, chairman of Poseidon and CEO of PIP Labs, joins the Sui Foundation as a strategic advisor.

What Holders Get When the Chain Retires

The token terms are what holders will read first. $DATA continues as the token of the DATA protocol on Sui, carried over one-to-one, with holder economics and governance rights at least equivalent to today. Locked and vesting positions carry over unchanged.

The sequencing is less settled. The existing DATA Network keeps operating until the upgrade is complete, and the foundation says a detailed timeline and holder transition plan will be published before the upgrade. How the token functions once the independent chain is gone remains an open question, and the EVM-based applications already writing to Trace, Kled and Numo among them, will need a path to keep running.

Why Sui Wants Data Provenance

Sui's own description of its AI stack is Walrus, Seal, Nautilus and Sui, with Sui as the coordination and provenance layer that enforces access rules and logs verifiable receipts. A registry of rights-cleared training data slots into the provenance half of that list, which is where the migration starts to make sense for both sides.

The timing argument comes from regulation. The announcement argues that the EU AI Act and ongoing litigation over training data have made provenance a procurement requirement for AI labs, and that the open internet has already been read.

The AI industry has reached the point where the open internet has been read, and the next frontier is defined by access to datasets with the consent and provenance that regulators require.

That is Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and chief product officer at Mysten Labs, the team behind Sui. Andrea Muttoni, CEO of the DATA Foundation, framed the deal as a way to build "beyond just an audit trail," toward encrypted reference file storage and potentially fully verifiable TEEs for evaluations and fine-tunings.

Until the transition plan lands, the fair reading is that the two foundations have agreed on a direction. The work of moving a live registry, its token and its applications onto Sui has not started in full.
