Swiss Regulator Approves First Retail Bitcoin ETF, Bends Fund Rules
FINMA approved Switzerland's first retail fund holding Bitcoin directly, waiving diversification rules. BIT's BBIT expects to list on SIX in November.

Switzerland's financial regulator has approved the country's first exchange-traded fund for retail investors that holds Bitcoin directly. To do it, FINMA granted the fund an exemption from the risk diversification rules that would normally apply.
The approval was announced on 20 October. FINMA's release did not name the provider, but BIT Asset Management AG then said the fund is its Bitcoin Fund ETF, ticker BBIT. The fund is expected to begin trading on SIX Swiss Exchange in November.
Why FINMA Waived the Diversification Rules
A fund that holds a single asset does not fit easily into rules built around spreading risk. FINMA approved an exemption in this case and gave its reasons plainly: Bitcoin has a long trading history and a particularly high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies.
Under Swiss law, the fund is classed as an "other fund for alternative investments" with a specific risk. That label matters for how it can be sold.
This is not FINMA's first crypto fund. In 2021 it authorised a fund that invests mainly in a basket of cryptocurrencies, but that product was open only to qualified investors. BBIT is the first one open to retail.
How BBIT Differs From Existing Bitcoin Products
BIT's pitch rests on structure. Most bitcoin products listed in Europe today are exchange-traded products (ETPs), which BIT describes as debt instruments that carry issuer risk. BBIT is instead a Swiss collective investment scheme, with its assets held separately.
In practice, if you hold a debt-style product, you are relying on the issuer. With a fund structure, the assets are ring-fenced.
BIT calls BBIT "currently Europe's only spot bitcoin ETF." That is the company's own claim.
"Investors can now access bitcoin through an ordinary Swiss bank account, with Swiss fund governance, independent custody and daily transparency on holdings," said Dominik Oggenfuss, chief executive of BIT Asset Management.
Who Is Behind the Fund
BIT was founded in 2019 as Matrixport and is headquartered in Singapore. Its Swiss arm was formerly Crypto Finance (Asset Management) AG. The group bought it in full in 2024, renamed it Matrixport Asset Management AG, and later gave it its current name.
Some basic details are still missing. BIT has not disclosed the fund's fee, custodian or retail distribution partner, and its announcement gives November rather than an exact listing date.
The Conditions Attached to Selling It
FINMA did not approve the fund without strings. Supervised institutions must take measures to reduce operational and custody risks, as set out in guidance it published on 12 January 2026.
Point-of-sale conduct rules under FinSA, the Swiss Financial Services Act, also apply. Sellers must give clear warnings about volatility and the risk of losing money, and must pay particular attention to whether the product suits each client.
The regulator was blunt about the risk itself. FINMA said Bitcoin investments remain highly risky even through an approved ETF, and that invested capital may lose a significant amount of its value.
More Swiss Bitcoin ETFs Could Follow
BBIT may not stay alone for long. FINMA said other fund providers have also submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs.
The next concrete marker is BBIT's first trading day on SIX in November. That is also when the missing fee and custody details will have to become public if the fund wants retail money.
