Tether Ends USDT Support on 5 Blockchains by Sept 2025

Tether has shown remarkable interest in layer 2 networks like the Lightning Network and emerging chains.

Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, has announced plans to discontinue USDT support for 5 legacy blockchains.

Tether shared the news in a recent blog post, listing Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand as the affected chains. The stablecoin issuer notes that the decision will be effective from September 1, 2025. As a result, users holding USDT on these chains have been advised to redeem their holdings before the date. There’s also an option to request an issuance of USDT on a support blockchain.

Why the Decision?

Tether claims that the decision is part of its efforts to align with community usage trends and redirect resources towards high-adoption blockchains. The decision comes after a close review of user activity across chains.

The stablecoin issuer observed market trends and demand before reaching its decision. Furthermore, Tether said it also received feedback from key community members and stakeholders and received a nod from these high-stakes members.

Additionally, Tether notes that although the affected chains played notable roles in its early years, recent data reveals slow usage over the last two years. Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoin, said in a statement, “As the digital asset ecosystem evolves, Tether remains committed to adapting alongside it. Sunsetting support for these legacy chains allows us to focus on platforms that offer greater scalability, developer activity, and community engagement—all key components for driving the next wave of stablecoin adoption.”

Growing Support for Layer 2s and Emerging Chains

Interestingly, the decision comes at a time when Tether has shown remarkable interest in layer 2 networks like the Lightning Network and emerging chains with significant interoperability and ecosystem adoption.

Moving its resources from networks with slow usage to platforms with more adoption shows Tether’s ambition to serve its global user base better.
