Uniswap Futures Go Live on CME: First DeFi Token Gets Regulated Futures

CME says FalconX and GSR executed the first block trade in its new UNI and BCH futures. Contract sizes, CME's crypto volumes and what is still unconfirmed.

Uniswap's UNI token now trades as a futures contract on CME Group, the largest regulated derivatives exchange in the US. On 20 October, CME announced that trading firms FalconX and GSR "have executed the first block trade in its new Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Uniswap (UNI) futures." A block trade is a large deal negotiated privately between two parties.

For a UNI holder, the change is about who can trade the token and how. Funds that cannot touch a crypto exchange, or that want a contract cleared on a regulated venue, now have a way to bet on UNI's price or to hedge against it falling. That new demand, or new selling pressure from hedging, does not have to pass through spot markets at all.

Contract Sizes for UNI and BCH Futures

CME first announced the products on 22 September. It gave October 19 as the launch date, "pending regulatory review." Each coin comes in a standard and a smaller Micro size:

  • Uniswap futures: 10,000 UNI per contract
  • Micro Uniswap futures: 1,000 UNI per contract
  • Bitcoin Cash futures: 250 BCH per contract
  • Micro Bitcoin Cash futures: 25 BCH per contract

The 20 October release does not say on which day the first trade happened. It also does not give the trade's size or price. Giovanni Vicioso, CME's global head of cryptocurrency products, said only that "trading now underway" gives clients "more versatility to manage cryptocurrency risk and exposure through our robust 24/7 marketplace."

Neither CME release we read says how the contracts settle, for example in cash or in tokens. Traders should check CME's contract specifications before assuming either.

Why Trading Firms Want Altcoin Futures

CME said the expansion answers "strong client demand for institutional-grade risk management tools across high-liquidity altcoin markets." The firms on the first trade make the same case, as you would expect from the people who will trade the contracts.

Griffin Sears is head of derivatives at FalconX. He said institutional demand "is moving beyond the largest digital assets toward tokens with distinct use cases." His examples were "Bitcoin Cash in payments and Uniswap in decentralized finance." He added that a regulated venue "gives institutions the hedging and capital-efficient exposure they've been asking for."

GSR chief executive Xin Song said the firm would support the new futures "from day one." In the September release, Ripple Prime president Noel Kimmel said institutions "need around-the-clock access to regulated derivatives."

How CME's Crypto Business Has Grown in 2026

UNI and BCH join an existing single-asset lineup. It already includes Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, Cardano, Chainlink, Stellar, Avalanche and Sui futures. CME added the last five this year. It says that expansion produced nearly $2 billion in year-to-date notional value growth.

CME also published figures for all of its crypto futures and options in 2026 so far:

Measure

Contracts

Notional value

Average daily volume

More than 242,000

$7.9 billion

Average daily open interest

Almost 240,000

$14.3 billion

Open interest is the value of contracts still outstanding. These totals cover CME's whole crypto suite, with Bitcoin and Ether contracts included. They say nothing yet about how much UNI will trade.

The number to watch is UNI open interest in the coming weeks. If it builds the way the 2026 altcoin contracts did, the case Sears made about institutional demand will have data behind it. If it stays thin, the first block trade will have been a launch event and little more.
