Cloud storage and spending such as with Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or MSFT Azure has gotten crazy expensive. And the SaaS sector, which is one of the biggest in tech, is one of the biggest spenders. They spend up to 50% of their total cost of revenue on cloud services. Plus, the cloud is centralized, has single points of failure, and you have no idea what Amazon or Google is doing with the data they are storing for you.

Walrus has a better way. First, on blobs. Blobs are large pieces of unstructured data. That can mean huge multimedia images, large backup files, or even data logs that software developers need to see where errors and bugs might be.

Filecoin and others have a tough time storing blobs. Even NFT metadata, which is Filecoin’s expertise, is stored easier on Walrus.

With decentralized storage, you truly own your data. It’s one of the big selling points of Web3 in the first place. And Walrus is more resilient than both centralized or other decentralized data providers. If any nodes go down, your data is still accessible to you. That’s not so true if AWS has an outage. That’s a big edge to Walrus.

The Walrus system is more efficient too. That’s thanks to Sui and the Move programming language. By storing the info as objects, blobs and other data are easier to manage and scalable.

AI LLM Storage & Chain Agnostic

Storing big files is one of Walrus’ huge advantages. A great use case for this is AI LLMs. That stands for Large Language Models like OpenAI’s o1 model. These models are big files, as you might expect.

And Walrus can store them for a provider like OpenAI to create decentralized access to the models. This makes Walrus a part of decentralized AI infrastructure. And that’s something we need desperately. Otherwise, we risk giving all our data away for free again, like we did with social media platforms.

We haven’t seen any other Web3 storage provider be able to provide this like Walrus can. Walrus is also chain agnostic. Any chain, any app.

These 2 factors alone put Walrus miles ahead of the competition. And we will admit we like this sector generally and Arweave in particular. We think it’s an excellent project. But it does not do these things that Walrus can do.
