Wells Fargo CEO Says Stablecoin Use Cases in US Remain Unclear

Charlie Scharf said on Wells Fargo's third-quarter call that US stablecoin use cases remain unclear, while its 21-bank consortium targets a 2027 launch.

Wells Fargo chairman and chief executive Charlie Scharf told analysts on the bank's third-quarter earnings call that use cases for stablecoins in the United States "remain unclear," while saying the bank is building the products anyway. The call took place on October 13.

If you hold dollar stablecoins, the practical read is that this is preparation, not competition yet. Wells Fargo has no stablecoin on the market. The consortium it belongs to has not named itself, has not closed, and has put its launch target in the first half of 2027. Its services are still in development.

What Scharf Said on the Call

Scharf framed stablecoins as something to be ready for rather than something to sell today.

"Use cases in the US for stablecoins remain unclear, but we're building solutions to be prepared as opportunities potentially unfold."

Alongside that, the bank is expanding its digital payments business through tokenized deposits and the planned stablecoin venture. That is what the call described, not a signed product.

The Consortium Is Pre-Launch, and Says So

Wells Fargo published the group's announcement on its own newsroom on 1 September 2026. Twenty-one leading international financial institutions committed to establish a new company in the second half of 2026, "subject to closing conditions," to support the issuance of a stablecoin solution. Wells Fargo is listed among the North American members alongside Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, PNC Financial Services, Scotiabank, TD Bank Group and WisdomTree.

The company's name "will be announced in due course," according to the release. Its initial focus is a USD-denominated stablecoin, with a longer-term ambition of expanding into stablecoins denominated in additional G7 currencies, with a euro offering as a priority.

The timetable in the bank's own words:

  • 1 September 2026: twenty-one institutions announce they have committed to establish the company.
  • Second half of 2026: formation targeted, subject to closing conditions.
  • First half of 2027: the group aims for its stablecoin solution to go to market.
  • Later: issuance in additional G7 currencies, with the euro first.

The release says the initiative "intends to be GENIUS Act and MiCA-compliant, as applicable," and that the product "will be utilised in a variety of use cases covering wholesale, institutional and retail markets where client benefits can be achieved by utilising a trusted form of digital money, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlements."

This is the second stage of a process that started smaller. The same release notes it follows an October 2025 announcement that an initial group of ten banks was exploring the issuance of a 1:1 reserve-backed form of digital money available on public blockchains.

The Quarter Behind the Call

The stablecoin comments came attached to a routine set of results. Wells Fargo reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $5,951 million, up from $5,589 million a year earlier. Total revenue was $21,870 million, up from $21,436 million. Diluted earnings per share was $1.87, up 13%, and average deposits were $1,482.9 billion, up 11%. Those figures come from the bank's earnings release.

The thing to watch is not the quote. It is whether the consortium closes, attaches a name, and puts a dollar token in front of customers by the first half of 2027 it has set for itself. Until then, Wells Fargo is describing an intention, filed under the same heading as every other large bank with a slide about digital assets.
