Zcash Jumps 12% as NU7 Upgrade Gets Activation Target

ZEC rose about 12% as developers merged the NU7 mainnet activation height. The upgrade targets Nov 6 UTC, but Zebra's stable release is still waiting on fixes.

A Zcash coin stands upright on a painted starting line on a dark road, beside a small sign with the number 3543405, with an unfinished starting gate behind it.

Zcash's next network upgrade now has a fixed starting line, and the market moved with it. ZEC rose about 12% to 13% in the 24 hours to Wednesday, 21 October, trading at roughly $1,270 to $1,300 depending on the data snapshot. Over the same stretch, developers wrote the NU7 mainnet activation height into Zcash's official specifications.

The catch sits one layer down. The node software that has to carry the switch isn't finished, and the Zcash Foundation's own tracker shows readiness well short of its target.

The Block Number Is Now in the Rulebook

Zcash upgrades don't switch on at a calendar date. They activate at a block height, the running count of blocks on the chain. Every node watches for the same number and starts following the new rules at the same block.

For NU7, that number is 3,543,405. ZIP pull request #1405, titled "Set the NU7 mainnet activation height to 3543405", was merged by its author, Sean Bowe, at 20:06 UTC on 21 October. The pull request says the ZIP editors agreed the height, and the Zebra tracker records the decision on 20 October. We covered the developers' agreement on the NU7 height when it happened. The merge is what turns that agreement into the written spec.

The change also carries a small, rather tidy detail. ZIP 237 now says NU7 trims Zcash's current supply cap by about 0.50 ZEC on mainnet, leaving it about 0.68 ZEC below MAX_MONEY, the protocol's hard maximum. That figure was agreed at a ZIP sync call on 20 October. Half a coin won't change anyone's view of Zcash's supply, but it shows how closely the rules are being pinned down.

What 25-Second Blocks Mean for Users

The feature most people will notice is speed. NU7 aims to cut Zcash's target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, a two-thirds reduction. If you send ZEC after the upgrade, your transaction should reach a block in roughly a third of the time it takes today.

The upgrade also changes where fees go: 60% of transaction fees will be held back rather than flowing straight into circulation.

NU7 has already run on testnet, Zcash's practice network. It activated there at height 4,465,026 around 6 October, according to the Zcash Foundation's Zebra tracker.

Zebra's Stable Release Is Still Waiting on Fixes

Zebra is the Zcash Foundation's node software, and Zebra 7.0.0 stable is the release that carries the mainnet activation height. The tracker says that release will be cut only after a selected group of sync fixes has been merged.

Those fixes matter. Operators have reported testnet nodes that stop syncing since 7.0.0-rc.0, the first release candidate. A node that stops syncing falls behind the chain, which is the last thing anyone wants near an upgrade.

The readiness numbers show the gap:

  • The tracker's activation observer reports about 14 of 31 peer groups ready, against a 75% quorum.
  • Six of the tracker's 14 sub-issues are marked complete.

Less than half the peer groups are ready, and the target is three quarters.

When NU7 Should Reach Mainnet

At the pace of blocks on 20 October, height 3,543,405 lands on Friday, 6 November, between 00:45 and 02:35 UTC. That is Thursday evening, 5 November, in the Americas. The tracker notes that the estimate shifts by a few minutes each day.

The rally and the upgrade arrived together, but the price data doesn't show that one caused the other. Whether ZEC holds its gains is a separate question from whether NU7 ships cleanly. The next concrete marker is the Zebra 7.0.0 stable release, and that depends on the sync fixes landing first.
