Zcash Surges as Bitcoin Slips, Fueling a New Privacy Rotation

Zcash is massively outperforming Bitcoin as shielded activity hits a four-year high, institutional access expands and the network prepares for its NU7 upgrade.

Zcash has emerged as one of the biggest winners in crypto while Bitcoin struggles to hold its ground. ZEC has gained thousands of percent over the past year, with its latest rally pushing the privacy-focused token above $1,600, while Bitcoin remains well below its recent highs.

The divergence is drawing fresh attention to Zcash's privacy features, growing on-chain activity and new institutional access. It also comes as investors increasingly compare ZEC's performance with Bitcoin rather than treating the token as another small-cap altcoin.

Our recent coverage of Zcash Tops $1,600 as Europe Gets Its First ZEC ETP detailed how the launch of Europe's first physically backed ZEC ETP added another layer to the rally.

Zcash is massively outperforming Bitcoin

ZEC has climbed roughly 2,900% over the past year, according to the figures behind the latest market comparison, while Bitcoin has moved in the opposite direction over the same period.

The difference becomes even more striking when looking at ZEC's performance against BTC itself. CoinGecko data shows ZEC has gained more than 2,700% against Bitcoin over the past year, with one ZEC worth roughly 0.0184 BTC as of September 26.

That does not necessarily mean investors are abandoning Bitcoin for Zcash. But the relative performance has put Zcash's privacy narrative back at the center of the market conversation.

ZEC's latest surge has also come alongside a sharp increase in trading activity and several developments that have expanded access to the asset.

Privacy is back at the center of the Zcash story

Zcash differs from Bitcoin through its optional shielded transactions, which use zero-knowledge proofs to hide transaction details such as the sender, recipient and amount.

Privacy is not mandatory across the entire Zcash network. Users can still transact through transparent addresses, where transaction information remains publicly visible. The Block recently reported that nearly 5 million ZEC, or roughly 23% of the circulating supply, was held in shielded pools.

What has changed recently is the amount of activity using those privacy features.

Zcash recorded 62,375 shielded transactions in the week ending September 24, the highest weekly level since 2022. The network also processed around $23.88 billion in transfer volume during the same period.

That rise matters because it gives the current rally a usage narrative beyond price speculation. At the same time, the 2022 comparison needs some context because earlier transaction activity was affected by a spam attack, making sustained activity in the coming weeks more important than a single weekly record.

NEAR Intents makes ZEC easier to access

Another part of the story is Zcash's integration with NEAR Intents, which allows users to swap assets across networks without having to manually navigate multiple blockchain environments.

The Zcash community says the integration was designed to make it easier to convert more than 130 assets into ZEC and increase access to Zcash's shielded ecosystem.

NEAR's own explorer currently shows substantial ZEC activity through its Intents infrastructure, although its public dashboard does not independently support the specific claim that 469,000 ZEC worth $736 million has been accumulated through the system.

The important point is that ZEC is becoming easier to access through cross-chain infrastructure, potentially reducing one of the barriers that has historically limited liquidity around privacy-focused assets.

Institutional access is expanding

Zcash's market structure has also changed significantly in recent months.

Grayscale's Zcash ETF, trading under the ticker ZCSH, crossed $500 million in assets earlier in September and held more than 550,000 ZEC at the time, according to reporting on the fund's holdings.

Europe has also gained its first physically backed Zcash ETP through 21Shares, giving investors on Euronext Paris and Amsterdam another regulated route to gain exposure to ZEC.

That product launch came alongside ZEC's move above $1,600, although the rally had already started before the European listing. This makes the ETP an additional source of access and visibility rather than a complete explanation for the price move.

Zcash is also preparing for a major upgrade

The network itself is preparing for another important change.

The upcoming NU7 upgrade is designed to reduce Zcash's target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. The change is intended to improve transaction confirmation times while also introducing limits for shielded actions to manage network and wallet resource demands.

NU7 does not increase Zcash's 21 million supply cap. Its issuance mechanics are being adjusted to account for the faster block production so the emission rate remains aligned with the existing schedule.

One important migration issue is also tied to the upgrade: once NU7 activates, version 4 transactions become invalid, which means funds remaining in the legacy Sprout pool will become unspendable.

The privacy trade-off is becoming a market narrative

The latest Zcash rally is therefore being driven by several developments arriving at the same time: stronger shielded activity, easier cross-chain access, new regulated investment products and a major network upgrade.

Bitcoin still has the advantage of being the largest and most established cryptocurrency, with far deeper liquidity and a much larger user base. Zcash's recent performance does not change those structural differences.

What it does show is that privacy has returned as a significant crypto market narrative.

For ZEC, the next question is whether the recent growth in shielded activity and institutional access can continue after the current price surge cools. If usage keeps rising alongside investment access, the market will have more than price momentum to point to when assessing Zcash's resurgence.
