6 Top Subnets on Bittensor

We have already published our Bittensor deep dives, see part 1 and part 2. This gives you an idea on how Bittensor and its $TAO token work. Now it’s time to dive some deeper into Tao subnets. According to Bittensor, subnets are incentive-based competition marketplaces. These produce a specific kind of digital commodity related to artificial intelligence.

So, we’re looking into how to find the best subnets and 6 of the top subnets. We cover this in two parts again.

How to Find Subnets?

First, I will take a look how to find good subnets. This combines battle tested research methods with some specific Bittensor related tools. Currently, there are 89 subnets, with more in the pipeline. There could be well over 200 by the end of this year. So, here we go.

1. Fundamentals

• This is a well-known research technique that fits any project, not only subnets. Look for the founding team’s experience. You can also check who they’re backed by.
• Value proposition — What real problem do they try to solve?
• Addressable market — Do they target a fast-growing vertical? For example, compute, AI agents, DePIN, or healthcare. This may increase their potential.

2. Narrative

Not only the tech counts, but also the way a project sells itself. Can they market their project? Is there a clear narrative? Does the team make good use of social media?

3. Traction

Does the project get traction? How many users or downloads does it have? Does it generate revenue? Does the token have a clear economic model, like buybacks.

4. Research tools

• TaoStats — It shows the leading subnets by market cap, price (in $TAO or in $USD), price action, or liquidity.
• BackProp Finance — Like TaoStats but on steroids. You need a Bittensor compatible wallet to use this tool.
• OAK Research Subnet list.

In our part 2, there are more research methods. However, using these research methods, I found the following 6 Tao subnets to be top-notch.

6 Top Subnets on Bittensor

Chutes — SN 64

Chutes is a Serverless AI Compute subnet. It provides GPUs for general service inference. Think of text/image to video AI generation services. Among others, it’s integrated with DeepSeek to process its requests. You can deploy, run, and scale any AI model in seconds. It’s one of the three subnets by Rayon Labs. Like Gradients and Nineteen.

Targon — SN 4

Targon is a decentralized, frontier AI lab or an inference provider. It improves AI models to arrive at conclusions based on data. Targon also enhances a deeper understanding of context and relationships. This improves human-AI interactions. It also improves output and performance of multi-modal AI systems. For example, it powers an app called Dippy AI with SN 11 (Dippy Roleplay).

Gradients — SN 56

Gradients allows everybody to access AI training. You don’t need to be an expert in training modules with Gradient. These are State-of-the-Art (SOTA) AI models. Gradient already trained over 118 trillion parameters. It can hold its ground with centralized competitors like Google. It’s one of the current three subnets by Rayon Labs. Like Chutes and Nineteen.

Data Universe — SN 13

Data Universe collects and stores huge amounts of data. It does this from all kinds of sources. Other subnets can use the collected data. It has already developed two main products, Gravity and Nebula. These analyze and visualize data. MacrocosmosAI is the team behind this subnet. This team keeps shipping and delivering with continual updates.

Nineteen — SN 19

The Nineteen subnet is all image generation and reasoning. On Bittensor it uses the Distributed Scaled Inference Subnet (DSIS) framework. This allows for optimal throughput of the network. It revolutionizes image processing. For example, you can use it for recognition and object detection. This is also one of the three subnets by Rayon Labs, like Chutes and Gradients.

BitMind — SN 34

BitMind is a deepfake detection model. So, it’s an AI model that detects AI generated pictures. Makes sense, right? Joking aside, this is a crucial tool. So, day by day, it’s becoming harder to distinguish between real and AI generated content. For instance, it has won the CoinBase Best Infrastructure Award. It offers a powerful detection mechanism. In turn, this helps to preserve the integrity of digital media.

Conclusion

Bittensor ($TAO) is on the forefront of AI tech with its subnets. However, before you invest in one or more of the subnets, make sure to do good research. The subnets have low market caps and not all will succeed. Hence, thorough research is important. On the other hand, Bittensor has all the makings for becoming successful in the AI sector.
