Bitcoin to $76K or $50K? Peter Brandt highlights key breakout pattern

Bitcoin has climbed above $72,500 as Peter Brandt turns more bullish following a key technical breakout. Here's why analysts see $76,000 as the next target while $50,000 remains a downside risk.

Bitcoin has staged a sharp recovery, climbing above $72,500 as bullish momentum returned to the broader crypto market. The broader rally follows a wider improvement in crypto sentiment, as discussed in our analysis of why crypto prices are surging. The move has also drawn attention from veteran trader Peter Brandt, who has shifted his stance after a key technical pattern developed on the Bitcoin chart.

Brandt's latest commentary highlights an inverse head-and-shoulders formation, while analyst Aksel Kibar's technical setup points toward a potential $76,000 Bitcoin price target if the breakout holds. At the same time, a failed breakout could reopen the path toward the $53,000 area, reviving speculation about a move toward $50,000.

Bitcoin Breakout Changes the Technical Picture

Bitcoin's recent move represents a significant change from the bearish structure that had dominated its chart.

Brandt previously viewed the developing inverse head-and-shoulders pattern cautiously because the right shoulder was taking longer to form. The broader market trend was also still pointing lower.

That assessment changed once the bottom formation developed and Bitcoin broke higher. Brandt indicated that he entered the breakout trade while acknowledging that the pattern could still fail.

That distinction is important. An inverse head-and-shoulders pattern does not guarantee a Bitcoin price target. Instead, traders use the formation to identify potential levels if price confirms the breakout.

The setup developed after Bitcoin struggled around the $60,000 region before forming a series of lows and eventually approaching the neckline area. Analysts had been watching the resistance closely as a potential confirmation point.

Can Bitcoin Reach $76,000?

Aksel Kibar's chart provides the clearest bullish scenario.

The analyst identified a key resistance area around 67,200-67,600, with a confirmed breakout potentially opening the way toward $76,000. The target is based on the projected move from the inverse head-and-shoulders structure rather than simply being an arbitrary price prediction.

With Bitcoin already trading above $72,500, the $76,000 level is now the next major test for bulls.

A sustained move above that level could strengthen the argument that the market has transitioned from the previous bearish structure into a broader recovery.

The recent rally has also coincided with a significant improvement in overall crypto sentiment. Bitcoin's move above $72,000 followed the market-wide short squeeze discussed in our Crypto Market Update August 20, when more than $3 billion in short positions were liquidated.

What Could Send Bitcoin Back Toward $50K?

The bullish setup is not guaranteed.

If Bitcoin fails to sustain its breakout and falls back below key support, the inverse head-and-shoulders formation could be invalidated. Kibar's analysis identifies a potential downside target around $53,000, while the broader market discussion has revived the possibility of Bitcoin eventually revisiting the $50,000 region.

That makes the current price action particularly important.

A successful breakout would keep $76,000 in focus. A failed breakout, however, could quickly shift attention toward lower support levels.

The market also remains sensitive to macroeconomic and geopolitical developments, meaning technical patterns could be disrupted by a sudden change in risk appetite.

Bitcoin Price Outlook Remains Divided

The current Bitcoin setup presents two very different possibilities.

On the bullish side, the completed inverse head-and-shoulders formation, the breakout above previous resistance and Bitcoin's move above $72,500 support the argument for further gains toward $76,000.

On the bearish side, a failed breakout could undermine the pattern and expose Bitcoin to a deeper correction, with $53,000 representing an important downside reference and the $50,000 area becoming a broader risk scenario.

Brandt's decision to enter the breakout trade adds weight to the bullish interpretation, but his willingness to acknowledge that the pattern could fail is equally important.

For traders, the next major question is therefore not simply whether Bitcoin can reach $76,000. It is whether BTC can hold the breakout and turn former resistance into support.

There was a reason to have expected a downside move in Bitcoin. An inverted H&S with a belabored right shoulder has a 60/40 chance to be resolved to the downside. And, the trend was down. But the completion of the H&S bottom changed that. I bought the breakout for better or worse Show more
