Bitcoin Rises After Fed Hike as Traders Look Past Tighter Policy

Bitcoin climbed after the Federal Reserve raised rates to 3.75% - 4.00%, as traders looked past an expected hike and focused on future Fed policy and crypto regulation.

Bitcoin moved higher after the Federal Reserve delivered its first rate hike since 2023, showing that an expected policy move does not always trigger an immediate crypto sell-off.

The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75% - 4.00% on September 16. The decision was unanimous and markets had largely expected it ahead of the announcement.

The Fed Hike Was Already Priced In

Markets had assigned roughly a 92.7% probability to a quarter-point hike before the decision. Bitcoin briefly fell toward $75,350 before climbing above $76,100 after the announcement. It later reached around $76,500 before settling near $76,349.

That reaction reflects a common market dynamic: when an event is widely expected, traders can position for it before it happens. The actual announcement can then produce a smaller reaction than a surprise would.

The bigger question was whether Fed Chair Kevin Warsh would signal a longer tightening cycle.

Another Hike Remains Possible

The Fed's projections show that 16 of 18 policymakers expect another rate hike before the end of 2026. That points to continued concern about inflation despite the latest move.

However, the immediate decision itself was not a surprise. That distinction helped Bitcoin absorb the rate increase rather than extending its decline.

The market is now likely to focus more closely on upcoming inflation and economic data, along with signals from the Fed about its next move.

Crypto Has Its Own Catalysts

The Fed is only one part of the current crypto market story.

The Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act had already pushed Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies lower. The procedural vote failed 49 - 50, falling short of the 60 votes required to move the legislation forward.

That setback triggered more than $669 million in crypto liquidations, adding to the volatility around Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP.

The regulatory setback may therefore be competing with monetary policy as a major short-term market driver.

What Comes Next for Bitcoin?

Bitcoin's post-Fed reaction shows that tighter monetary policy alone does not determine short-term crypto prices.

The September rate hike was heavily anticipated, allowing traders to position ahead of the announcement. Attention now shifts toward the possibility of another hike, inflation data and the direction of U.S. crypto regulation.

For Bitcoin, the next major catalyst may therefore come from a combination of Fed expectations and the future of the CLARITY Act, rather than the September rate decision itself.
