Christie’s Bets on Crypto for Real Estate Deals

Christie’s, known for fine art auctions, is now diving deeper into crypto.

Christie’s Bets on Crypto for Real Estate Deals

The company has launched a dedicated team to handle real estate deals that use only cryptocurrency. These transactions involve no banks or traditional financing, just digital assets.

According to The New York Times, this new division at Christie’s International Real Estate will bring together crypto specialists. Also, legal experts and market analysts to help property buyers and sellers who want to complete deals entirely in crypto. This marks another bold step in Christie’s ongoing push into digital finance.

From Bitcoin to Beverly Hills

This move comes after several successful luxury property sales that used crypto. One standout example is a $65 million home in Beverly Hills that was purchased with Bitcoin. That deal, completed without a bank involved, showed Christie’s that there’s serious demand for high-end real estate transactions using digital currency.

Aaron Kirman, CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate, said the company decided to formalize the service after seeing growing interest from wealthy crypto holders looking to buy property. “This is for the buyer and seller who both want to stay in crypto,” he told The Times.

Christie’s has already established itself as a forward-thinking player in the crypto space. It was one of the first major auction houses to sell NFTs, including the groundbreaking $69 million sale of Beeple’s digital artwork in 2021. The firm also launched an Ethereum-based auction platform in 2022.

A Growing Trend in Real Estate and Crypto

The real estate world is slowly opening up to crypto as investors look for more flexible, borderless ways to buy property. By skipping traditional banks, buyers can avoid lengthy approval processes, while sellers can receive payments faster and sometimes at lower transaction costs.

Christie’s is not alone. Sotheby’s, its main competitor, has also leaned into the crypto world, offering NFT auctions and accepting crypto payments. While both firms saw a dip in sales in 2024—Christie’s reported $5.7 billion, down 6% from the previous year—their digital ventures are gaining momentum.
