Monero Futures Open Interest Tops $300M as XMR Holds Above $600
Monero futures open interest hit about $319.2 million with XMR above $600, near January's peak before a sharp crash. Here's what the leverage data shows.

Traders are loading leverage back into Monero. Futures open interest, the dollar value of all futures contracts still open, stood at about $319.2 million on Oct. 22, according to CoinGlass, with XMR trading at $615.32.
That puts it close to January's peak of around $320 million, as tracked by SoSoValue. January's peak came just before the coin's sharpest fall of the year, which is why traders are paying attention.
How Open Interest Builds Pressure
Every futures contract has a buyer and a seller. Open interest counts how many of those contracts stay open, so a rising number means new positions are being added, not just traded back and forth. It doesn't tell you which direction traders are betting.
The risk comes from the borrowed money behind many of those positions. When the price moves hard, exchanges close out traders whose margin runs dry. Those forced closures, called liquidations, can push the price further in the same direction.
Right now, futures trading dominates. CoinGlass shows about $424.7 million in XMR futures volume over 24 hours, against roughly $18.2 million in spot volume. That's more than 20 times as much. Liquidations, though, were small: about $328,696 over the same day.

The price itself is holding up. XMR was down 1.19% over 24 hours but up 12.4% over seven days. It recently topped $600 for the first time since January, a level we flagged in our look at Monero's $600 test. The coin has made higher highs and higher lows since July, when it traded around $320.
The January Crash Traders Keep Pointing To
The comparison is hard to ignore. XMR hit about $790 on Jan. 14. By the first week of February it was under $300, a slide marked by long liquidations worth several million dollars, according to Coinglass.
Pseudonymous analyst Doctor Profit linked the two moments directly: "The last Time we reached that amount of Open Interest was in Jan 2026. Monero Crashed 66% in the next 20 days. I Smell a very big Liquidation Event on XMR."
That's a warning, not evidence that history will repeat. High open interest makes a sharp move more painful when it comes. It doesn't decide when, or which way.
Total open interest in dollar terms has topped $300 million only a few times, all of them this year.
The Data Trackers Don't Agree on the Level
Not every tracker sees a peak. Santiment put XMR futures open interest at $198 million at the Oct. 20 close. That's below its Sep. 5 close of $208.8 million and only the fifth-highest daily close of the past year.
Counted in coins, the numbers split again. Santiment had about 329,000 XMR open on Oct. 20, below roughly 402,000 XMR on Sep. 2. Another count put the figure at 515,730 XMR, a five-week high and up from 400,000 XMR a week earlier.
So each figure is best read against its own history. And on direction, the sources line up. Santiment recorded about 22% growth in coin-denominated open interest between Oct. 15 and Oct. 20, while the price rose 9%.
Funding Rates Tell a Calmer Story
There's one detail that softens the alarm. Perpetual futures use funding rates, regular payments between long and short traders that keep the contract price close to spot. When longs pay a hefty premium, it usually means the crowd is eager to bet on a rise.
That eagerness has faded. The seven-day average funding rate ran at about 2.7 times its reference average from Sep. 28 to Oct. 4. From Oct. 14 to Oct. 20 it cooled to about 0.9 times, even as open positions kept growing.
In plain terms, more traders are holding futures, but they aren't paying up to stay long the way they were three weeks ago. Positioning is heavy, without the overheated funding that often comes before a flush.
The numbers to watch are simple. If open interest keeps climbing while the price stalls below its recent highs, the pressure builds. A jump in the daily liquidation total, now in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, would be the first sign it's being released.
