The Coldcard Bitcoin wallet hack is one of the biggest hardware wallet security incidents in recent years. Attackers stole 1,367 Bitcoin (BTC) worth nearly $89 million. They exploited a flaw in how some Coldcard wallets created recovery seeds. This was not a normal crypto hack. Hackers did not use AI, malware or brute force attacks. Instead, they took advantage of weak random numbers used to create some wallet seeds.

What Caused the Coldcard Bitcoin Wallet Hack?

Every crypto wallet creates a seed phrase. This seed phrase is the master key to your Bitcoin.

A secure wallet should create the seed with cryptographically secure random numbers. That makes it almost impossible for anyone else to generate the same seed.

Some Coldcard wallets did not do this correctly.

A software bug introduced in 2021 caused some devices to use a non-cryptographic pseudo-random number generator (PRNG). The wallet should have used a secure hardware random number generator instead. Because of this bug, some seed phrases became much easier to predict.

Why Was This So Dangerous?

A normal Bitcoin seed phrase is almost impossible to guess.

The affected wallets were different.

The weak random numbers reduced the number of possible seed phrases. This allowed attackers to recreate possible seeds instead of guessing billions of random combinations.

Once they found the correct seed, they could access the wallet and move the Bitcoin.

Which Coldcard Wallet Models Were Affected?

Researchers believe the Coldcard Mk2 and Mk3 models faced the highest risk.

The Mk4, Mk5 and Coldcard Q may also have been affected. However, researchers are still studying how much randomness those devices kept.

Can a Firmware Update Fix the Coldcard Vulnerability?

No. Installing the latest firmware does not make an old seed phrase safe.

If your wallet created its seed with an affected firmware version, you should:

  • Create a new seed phrase.
  • Move all your Bitcoin to the new wallet.
  • Stop using the old seed.

Without a new seed phrase, your funds could still be at risk.

Why Being Offline Didn't Protect Users

Many people believe hardware wallets are completely safe because they stay offline. This attack shows that being air-gapped is only one part of security.

If a wallet creates a weak seed phrase, keeping it offline will not fix the problem. An attacker who can recreate the seed does not need physical access to the wallet.

Simply put, an offline wallet is only as secure as the seed phrase it creates.

Did Open-Source Code Prevent the Coldcard Exploit?

Coldcard's software is open source. Anyone can review its code. Many people think open-source software is always safer because anyone can inspect it.

This incident shows that is not always true. Researchers say the vulnerable code stayed public for years before anyone found the problem.

Open source helps improve security. However, it still needs regular testing, code reviews, and independent security audits.

How Much Bitcoin Was Stolen in the Coldcard Hack?

Blockchain tracker Onchain Lens says the first three attack waves stole about 1,367 BTC, worth around $88.6 million.

Some victims lost their Bitcoin within minutes. One investor in Canada reportedly lost about $1.6 million.

The Biggest Lesson

The Coldcard Bitcoin wallet hack shows that even trusted hardware wallets can fail because of software bugs.

Keeping a wallet offline is important. However, it cannot protect your Bitcoin if the seed phrase was weak from the start.

Always install the latest firmware. Follow official security updates. If your wallet created a seed using affected firmware, generate a new seed phrase and move your Bitcoin as soon as possible.
