A new industry report predicts that renewable energy could power 70% Bitcoin mining by 2030. This would be a major shift, making Bitcoin more environmentally-friendly.
The report, released by the MiCA Crypto Alliance in collaboration with data analytics firm Nodiens, highlights a growing trend among Bitcoin miners toward cleaner energy sources. The report also notes a sharp decline in the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels, which powered 63% of mining in 2011. However, those figures have dropped to just 20% by 2024.

Interestingly, renewable energy already makes up 41% of Bitcoin’s mining power as of late 2024. According to the data, wind and solar have made significant gains, accounting for 10.86% and 6.07% of mining energy respectively.
The shift is driven by multiple factors. Economic incentives built into Bitcoin’s proof-of-work mechanism reward miners who can reduce energy costs. With renewables becoming more affordable and abundant, they are increasingly attractive to operators looking to stay competitive.
Countries and Companies Lead the Green Mining Push
Policy trends and climate concerns are also shaping the industry. As global governments push for decarbonization, Bitcoin miners are under growing pressure to adapt. Some countries are now actively encouraging green-powered mining. Ethiopia, for example, reportedly earned $1 billion in 2024 from Bitcoin mining by tapping surplus electricity from its Grand Renaissance Dam, a hydropower facility.
While Bitcoin’s total energy use may still rise in line with its price, the carbon footprint could shrink significantly if current trends continue. Increased grid decarbonization and mining efficiency improvements are expected to play a key role.
The findings suggest that by 2030, Bitcoin mining may not only be more sustainable, but could also play a positive role in the global clean energy transition.
