Deutsche Bank Nears Crypto Custody Launch, Eyes Asia in 2027

Deutsche Bank is weeks away from a German crypto custody launch and plans to expand to Asia in 2027, beginning with Bitcoin, Ether and key stablecoins.

Deutsche Bank is weeks away from launching a crypto custody service for institutional clients in Germany, and it plans to extend the same service to Asia in 2027. The German go-live still depends on finishing the applicable regulatory timeline.

The bank set out the product itself on 16 September: a digital asset custody solution for institutional and corporate clients in Europe, due to launch this year subject to regulatory checks. It has since been authorised by Germany's financial regulator, BaFin, under the EU's MiCA rules and appears on the European Securities and Markets Authority's interim register of crypto-asset service providers. The register carries a 12 October 2026 authorisation date, though the exact figure is difficult to pin down from the pages available.

What the German Service Will Hold

At launch, the bank will support a selected range of assets: Bitcoin and Ether, plus selected stablecoins or e-money tokens including USDC, EURC and EURAU. That list may grow over time, subject to client demand and the bank's product-approval, risk and regulatory processes. Tokenized financial instruments sit on the roadmap rather than in the first release.

The narrow opening menu is the interesting design choice. A bank custody desk that starts with two majors and three euro and dollar stablecoins is aimed at clients who want a regulated place to hold treasury and collateral, not a venue for long-tail tokens.

Clients, Keys and the Security Behind Them

Deutsche Bank will manage the wallets and private keys on clients' behalf, which removes the need for a client to build and run its own custody setup. The initial target group is clients of the bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank: corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign institutions. It is not intended for retail clients, and the bank notes that crypto-assets are not covered by a deposit-guarantee scheme in the way eligible bank deposits are.

The controls listed are the ones you would expect from a regulated institution: secure key generation and hardware-based protection, segregation of duties, multi-person approvals, separate warm and cold storage, a redundant technical setup and controlled backup and recovery. Selected external technology and infrastructure providers handle defined technical components.

"We see them as new rails that can coexist with existing market infrastructures," Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the corporate bank, said in the September announcement. "Our aim is to offer clients a secure and regulated gateway to this evolving market."

Why Asia Is Next in 2027

The Asia plan is part of a wider target of roughly 8% compound annual revenue growth in the corporate bank from 2025 to 2028. Which Asian financial centres the bank means has not been disclosed; the available reporting describes the region only in general terms.

It would join a widening group of large banks packaging custody for institutions. BNY has already taken a regulated custody offering to EU institutions under MiCA, and the pitch across these launches is similar: keep digital assets inside supervised infrastructure rather than in a client's own wallet.

For now the checkpoints are the German go-live, which the bank still frames as subject to its regulatory timeline, and any detail on which Asian markets come first in 2027.
