Hana Bank settles $100M digital bond on Euroclear's blockchain in a day

Hana Bank issued a $100M digital bond on Euroclear's blockchain, settling same-day in a Korean first.

Hana Bank, South Korea's second-largest lender by assets, settled a $100 million digital bond on Euroclear's blockchain in a single day, the first time a Korean financial institution has used the international depository's distributed ledger directly.

The bond cleared same-day, collapsing the three to five business day cycle that conventional bond settlement usually takes. For a fund or a treasury desk, that gap is the point: cash arrives the same afternoon, counterparty risk shrinks, and capital goes back to work rather than waiting in a back office.

What changed in the plumbing

Euroclear runs one of the world's largest central securities depositories out of Brussels. The bond sat on its Digital Financial Market Infrastructure, or D-FMI, which handles issuance, registration and settlement on a distributed ledger rather than through legacy systems.

The practical test was simpler than that sounds. Institutional investors bought and traded the bond through their existing Euroclear accounts, with no new setup on their end. Most tokenization pilots stop at a custom wallet or a single venue. This one plugged into the network where institutional money already lives.

Standard Chartered was the sole lead manager. Hana used documentation from its existing global medium-term note program, the same paperwork banks already file for traditional bond issuance.

What it signals for tokenization in Asia

A Hana Bank official said the issuance and the switch to T+0 settlement represent "a significant step beyond simply diversifying our funding channels, as they bring blockchain technology into the capital market."

Hana has nearly $500 billion in client assets under management, the kind of balance sheet where a settlement upgrade starts to move the broader market's plumbing. South Korea's Financial Services Commission has set a February 2027 launch for a full tokenized securities framework, and Hana's bond is the first live proof that Korean banks can plug into established global blockchain settlement without waiting for domestic rules to catch up.

The bond was first disclosed by the Yohnap Agency on Monday. Hana Bank and Euroclear did not immediately respond to requests for additional detail, including which foreign currency the bond was denominated in.
