Metaplanet Raises $5.4B to Buy More Bitcoin
Metaplanet, a Japan-based investment firm making waves in the crypto world, has just made history.

CEO Simon Gerovich announced a record $5.4 billion equity raise to buy Bitcoin. It’s a bold play to reach a new target of 210,000 BTC by 2027.
This aggressive strategy builds on the company’s growing reputation as “Asia’s MicroStrategy,” referring to the U.S. firm known for stockpiling Bitcoin on its balance sheet. But what sets Metaplanet apart is not just the size of its Bitcoin bet. It’s how they’re raising the money, and the impact that might have on both traditional finance and digital assets.
A Groundbreaking Funding Model
In a first for Japan, Metaplanet issued stock acquisition rights priced above the current market. Typically, companies offer a discount of 8 to 10% to attract investors. Not this time. The company flipped the script with a structure that favors existing shareholders and shows strong investor confidence.
Gerovich emphasized that this approach is “unprecedented in scale” and noted that the company’s last two equity deals totaled 887 billion yen—about $6.2 billion. That figure is nearly eight times more than the combined total of all top 30 equity issuances in Japan over the past year. These moves position Bitcoin not just as a reserve asset but as a new standard for capital formation.
For retail investors, this might signal a shift. When legacy companies begin to adopt crypto-native strategies to raise funds, it points to deeper integration between the old financial world and the new one.
Bitcoin as Corporate Strategy
This is more than just one firm buying Bitcoin. It reflects a growing trend among corporations that view Bitcoin as both a hedge and an opportunity. Companies like Tesla, Block, and MicroStrategy made headlines in recent years by adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets. Metaplanet is taking it to the next level in Asia.
As more firms look to alternative assets to weather inflation, global uncertainty, and a shifting currency landscape, Bitcoin is becoming part of the conversation in boardrooms. A $5.4 billion raise is proof that the appetite isn’t slowing down.
