U.S. Bank Runs a Live USBDC Pilot as 21 Banks Plan a 2027 Stablecoin
U.S. Bank's USBDC pilot ran live on Stellar, 21 banks plan a stablecoin for 2027, and Anchorage links its coins to Securitize. Here is what is real today.

U.S. Bank has moved a dollar stablecoin across the Atlantic on a public blockchain. A group of 21 large banks has promised one of its own for 2027. Both announcements can read like launches, but only some of this is live, and very little of it is something an ordinary holder can buy, send or hold today.
For anyone holding stablecoins, the useful question is simple: which of these coins exist on-chain now, who can use them, and what controls does the issuer keep? The answers differ a lot from bank to bank.
Project | Status | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
U.S. Bank USBDC | Live pilot transaction completed | U.S. Bank's own entities only |
21-bank consortium stablecoin | Committed to forming a company | No one yet; market launch aimed at first half of 2027 |
Anchorage Digital stablecoins via Securitize | Partnership announced October 20, 2026 | Securitize mints and redeems directly |
USBDC Is Live on Stellar, but Only Inside U.S. Bank
U.S. Bank launched USBDC, which it calls "a proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin". The bank completed a live pilot transaction on the Stellar blockchain "to enable a cross-border payment between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe".
That wording matters. The money moved from one part of U.S. Bank to another. No outside client was involved, and the release does not describe a product clients can sign up for.
The bank also published the pilot's issuer address on Stellar: GDABKPZMAIULVJVJJQM7L3VIG5A2IS5V4KP2P3YNP6YWRUBJNBGFGG6E. Anyone can look that address up on a Stellar explorer, which is more than most bank announcements offer.
Freezing and Clawback Were Part of the Test
The detail holders should notice sits further down the release. U.S. Bank says the pilot "evaluates minting, payment redemption, freezing and clawback capabilities", and that it also tests the bank's internally developed Digital Asset Platform.
In plain terms, the issuer tested whether it can stop a USBDC balance from moving and pull tokens back. That puts a bank-issued coin firmly in the controlled category. If USBDC ever reaches outside users, they should expect the issuer to keep those powers.
Anything beyond the pilot is still an idea. The bank lists "enhanced liquidity management, collateral mobility, cross-border treasury operations and other institutional use cases" as "future applications under exploration". None of those uses is aimed at retail holders.
21 Banks Have a Plan and a Date, Not a Coin
On September 1, 2026, 21 financial institutions said they had committed "to establish a new company in H2 2026, subject to closing conditions, to support the issuance of a stablecoin solution." The coin would start in US dollars and later cover other G7 currencies, with the euro a priority.
The group "aims for its stablecoin solution to go to market in the first half of 2027." The company has not been named.
The member list is long:
- North America: Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, PNC Financial Services, Scotiabank, TD Bank Group, Wells Fargo and WisdomTree
- Europe: Santander, BBVA, Commerzbank, Crédit Agricole, Deutsche Bank, Lloyds, Rabobank and UBS
- Other regions: MUFG, Sirius International Holding and Standard Bank
The project grew from an initial group of ten banks that, in October 2025, were exploring "a 1:1 reserve‑backed form of digital money". In a year it has gone from exploring to committing to a company. It still has closing conditions to clear before that company exists, and a further launch step after that.
Anchorage Connects Its Stablecoins to Securitize
Anchorage Digital Bank is further along, because its coins already exist. On October 20, 2026, it announced a partnership under which "Securitize mints and redeems them directly with Anchorage Digital Bank, which also handles custody and settlement."
The coins in question include USDtb, issued with Ethena Labs, and USA₮, developed with Tether. Anchorage also disclosed what backs USDtb: as of August 31, 2026, about 99% of its $530 million in reserves sat in BlackRock's BUIDL fund.
For a USDtb holder, that is the most concrete figure in this whole wave. The reserve backing a coin you can hold is, almost entirely, a single tokenized fund.
Several Bank Projects Could Not Be Checked Against Their Own Releases
Other bank stablecoin and custody projects are in circulation. Their status could not be confirmed against the companies' or regulators' own releases for this article:
- VersaBank's Roughrider Coin and custody on Fiserv's Digital Asset Platform
- Deutsche Bank's crypto custody with Bitpanda, which may be live or still planned
- Sygnum Bank's custody service
- Circle's national trust bank and Sony Bank's planned US trust bank
- The OCC, Federal Reserve and FDIC rules implementing the GENIUS Act
None of this means those projects are not real. It means their status is not settled here.
Of the confirmed projects, the next fixed marker is the consortium's company formation, set for the second half of 2026. Until then, the only bank-linked dollar coins a holder can actually own are the ones that already trade, such as USDtb, and not the ones still being tested inside a bank.
