Universal Brings USDU Stablecoin to Solana for Professional Clients

Universal is bringing its UAE-regulated USDU stablecoin to Solana, but only for professional clients. The licence clauses, backing claims and missing details.

Universal said on 13 October 2026 that it is bringing USDU, its US dollar-backed stablecoin, to Solana, with Aquanow handling global distribution and institutional access. The company's announcement says the move brings "USDU's UAE-regulated issuance and reserve framework to Solana."

For most people holding stablecoins on Solana, the first thing to know is that this token is not aimed at them. Universal's issuing entity is licensed to issue USDU "to Professional Clients only," and the company describes the token as built for "professional and institutional participants" in the UAE and "across permitted international markets."

The Licence Clauses Behind USDU

The issuer is Universal Digital Intl Limited. Its announcement says the company is established in ADGM and "regulated by the FSRA to conduct the regulated activity of issuing a Fiat-Referenced Token to Professional Clients only." It is also a Registered Foreign Payment Token Issuer with the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) under the PTSR.

Those registrations come with a limit on how USDU can be spent inside the country. The announcement puts it this way:

"USDU may be used as a means of Payment for the purchase of Digital Assets and Digital Assets Derivatives in the UAE. USDU may not be used for general payment purposes in the mainland UAE (i.e. UAE domestic payments)."

In plain terms, the token can pay for crypto and crypto derivatives in the UAE, but it is not a dirham substitute for everyday purchases there.

Universal also calls USDU "the first USD-backed stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE as a Foreign Payment Token." That is the company's own description of its registration.

The distributor has its own licence. Aquanow operates in the UAE through Aquanow ME FZE, incorporated in Dubai World Trade Centre under licence number L-2795 and regulated by Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.

Backing Claims and Monthly Attestations

Universal says USDU "is backed 1:1 by USD reserves" and that "reserves are independently attested and published each month." An attestation is a periodic check by an outside firm that reserves match the tokens in circulation. It is narrower than a full audit.

The size of those reserves has not been verified for this article, and the announcement does not give a figure for USDU in circulation.

What It Means for Solana Stablecoin Supply

Universal says the integration lets users hold and transfer USDU on Solana for digital asset settlement, treasury management and other on-chain workflows. Juha Viitala is the Senior Executive Officer. He said: "Expanding USDU to Solana brings the reach of regulated, USD-denominated liquidity to one of the most active environments for on-chain payments and financial applications."

That pitch fits Solana. The chain has been chasing institutional settlement. One example is a delivery-versus-payment settlement launch with JPMorgan input. Whether USDU adds anything meaningful to Solana's stablecoin supply is a different question, and the announcement does not answer it.

Three details are missing:

  • No supply figure. There is no stated amount of USDU planned or minted on Solana, so the effect on the chain's stablecoin total cannot be measured yet.
  • No start date. The announcement describes the integration but does not say when USDU goes live on Solana.
  • No mint address. No Solana token address for USDU appears in the material reviewed. Until Universal publishes one, there is no way to tell an official USDU token from a lookalike.

The professional-client restriction also caps how far USDU can spread on Solana's retail-heavy apps. The numbers to watch are the published mint address, the first on-chain supply that shows up against it, and whether the next monthly attestation covers tokens issued on Solana.
