At the OpenSource AI Summit in San Francisco this week, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin raised serious concerns about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to be centralized.

In his speech, Buterin cautioned that a “45-person government” could wield the power to control a billion people. He warned that this could happen if centralized AI systems are left unchecked. He also pointed out that merely decentralizing AI through a network of billions of AIs might not be enough. According to Buterin, these AIs could still “just agree to merge and become a single thing.” This would result in losing the diversity and independence needed for true decentralization.
Buterin argued that decentralization cannot thrive in a vacuum. For it to be reliable, he believes it must be tied to something already decentralized in the world. And what is more decentralized than humans? “Humans themselves are probably the closest thing the world has to that”. Buterin said, suggesting that people, not just machines, should play a central role in ensuring that AI remains decentralized.

In Buterin’s view, the key to a successful AI future lies in “human-AI collaboration.” He envisions a world where AI serves as the engine and humans take on the role of the steering wheel. This partnership would ensure that both human judgment and AI’s power work in tandem, combining their strengths in a way that maximizes safety and decentralization.
