Cross River to Tokenize Loans on Arbitrum From Day One

Cross River and Arbitrum developer Offchain plan to tokenize loans at origination on Arbitrum One, with production deployment targeted for early 2027.

The words Cross River beside the Arbitrum logo, floating over a dark, blurred river in deep navy blue.

Cross River, the US bank behind a long list of fintech lending products, is putting tokenization inside its lending platform with Offchain, the developer of Arbitrum. The two companies announced on November 3 that assets originated through Cross River's platform will be tokenized "from day one" and will live on Arbitrum One.

For anyone watching Arbitrum, this means a regulated bank plans to use the network as the record for loans it originates. Under the plan, the loans would not be tokenized later, after they have been made. It is still a plan. A proof of concept is finished, and production deployment is targeted for early 2027.

What Moves Onchain, and What Stays the Same

The release describes assets that can be "funded, held and transferred on Arbitrum One from the moment they are created." It adds that ownership, funding, payment and servicing activity "can remain on a shared record throughout the asset lifecycle."

Borrowers are not supposed to notice any of this. Applications, funding and repayments "continue through the same customer-facing experiences they use today," with Offchain's ZeroDev wallet infrastructure running underneath.

The bank also keeps its role. The release says Cross River "remains the regulated bank and lender of record" and that tokenization "does not change the underwriting, risk management or compliance standards applied to originated assets." So the blockchain changes how a loan is recorded and moved. It does not change who decides whether you get the loan, or on what terms.

Why Start at Origination

Cross River founder and CEO Gilles Gade put the case in one line. "Tokenization belongs at origination," he said. "Starting there means one record, fewer steps, from funding through every change of hands."

Offchain CEO and co-founder Steven Goldfeder framed it around the banks themselves: "Financial institutions need infrastructure they can shape around their business."

The commercial pitch is about who buys the loans. The release lists "continuous forward-flow purchase programs," which are standing arrangements to buy new loans as they are made, along with "more flexible commitment sizes and new approaches to packaging and delivering to credit investors." It says this could open "new pools of global capital, including onchain funds and international investors."

That is the part most relevant to crypto. If the loans exist as tokens on Arbitrum One from creation, an onchain fund could in principle hold them directly. The release does not say that any such fund has signed up.

What the Release Leaves Out

Several details are not public yet. The announcement does not give:

  • the size of the deal or its financial terms
  • which loan types will be tokenized first
  • an exact launch date beyond "early 2027"

The proof of concept showed "loan tokenization," in the release's words. Production is a different test, with real borrowers, real investors and real money.

Cross River's Growing Onchain Footprint

This is not Cross River's first step into crypto infrastructure. The bank was part of the group that took stablecoin rails live with Visa and Fireblocks. The Arbitrum deal moves from payments to the loans themselves.

The next milestone is production deployment in early 2027. Until then, the open questions are which loans go on Arbitrum One first and whether onchain buyers actually show up for them.
