Ripple and BNY expand XRP and RLUSD custody as they explore tokenized trade finance on the XRP Ledger

Ripple has expanded its relationship with BNY to include custody support for XRP and its RLUSD stablecoin, adding another major financial institution to the infrastructure supporting its digital asset business. Announced on October 27, 2026, the move builds on BNY’s existing role as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD.

The announcement also highlights a broader push to bring blockchain technology into traditional financial operations. Ripple and BNY plan to explore tokenized trade finance applications on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), including an initiative involving C2FO, a global working-capital platform.

The developments point to a shift from simply issuing and holding digital assets toward using them in payments, settlement, and capital markets. However, the custody expansion is distinct from the trade-finance initiative, which remains under exploration rather than being a confirmed, fully operational settlement service.

BNY adds XRP and RLUSD to its digital asset custody platform

BNY, formerly known as BNY Mellon, has expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform to support XRP and RLUSD. The service allows eligible institutional clients to safeguard and manage these digital assets within the bank’s custody and control framework.

The arrangement extends an existing relationship. BNY already serves as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD, holding the assets that back the stablecoin. It also has an existing custody relationship with Ripple Prime.

The expanded collaboration is intended to give institutions a more established route to hold XRP and RLUSD through a traditional financial services provider. This can matter to organizations that need formal custody arrangements, operational controls, and established risk-management processes before incorporating digital assets into their activities.

BNY also intends to enable clients to mint and redeem RLUSD directly through the bank. Minting creates new stablecoins against the corresponding reserve assets, while redemption allows eligible holders to exchange RLUSD for the underlying value under the applicable arrangements.

Direct access through a major custodian could simplify the process for institutions that want to use the stablecoin for payments, settlement, or other financial workflows. The precise availability and terms of these services will depend on the bank’s implementation and client eligibility.

BNY manages tens of trillions of dollars in assets under custody and administration, giving the partnership potential reach across a large institutional financial network. That scale does not guarantee adoption of XRP or RLUSD, but it provides a significant platform for expanding access to digital assets.

Ripple and C2FO explore faster trade finance settlement

Alongside the custody expansion, Ripple is working with C2FO to explore tokenized trade finance using the XRP Ledger. C2FO operates a working-capital platform that helps businesses access funding tied to their receivables and payment arrangements.

Traditional trade finance can involve lengthy payment cycles. Suppliers may have to wait for buyers to settle invoices while covering payroll, inventory, transportation, and other operating costs. Access to working capital can therefore be important even when a supplier has already delivered goods or services.

Tokenization can represent eligible financial claims digitally, while blockchain-based settlement can help coordinate transfers and payment processing. In the proposed initiative, the XRP Ledger and RLUSD could support parts of this process by enabling digital settlement between participants.

The potential benefit is a more efficient path from an approved receivable to usable funds. Faster settlement could help suppliers manage cash flow and reduce the time capital remains tied up in outstanding invoices.

However, the initiative should not yet be described as a live system that has already cut 30- to 90-day payment waits to seconds. The announcements describe work to explore tokenized trade finance and expand investor access to the asset class; they do not establish that those time reductions have been achieved in a production deployment.

The eventual impact will depend on the structure of the financing arrangements, the assets involved, participant onboarding, regulatory requirements, and how the settlement process integrates with existing business systems.

RLUSD moves further into institutional finance

RLUSD is central to Ripple’s strategy of connecting blockchain-based settlement with institutional financial services. The dollar-pegged stablecoin has reached a market capitalization of approximately $2.5 billion, according to figures cited in coverage of the announcement.

Its reserve custody arrangement with BNY is an important part of that model. Expanding BNY’s role to include client custody for RLUSD creates a broader relationship that goes beyond holding the assets backing the stablecoin.

The planned minting and redemption access could also help eligible institutions move between traditional money and RLUSD through an established banking relationship. That may be useful for payment flows and digital asset transactions where participants need a stable unit of account rather than exposure to a volatile cryptocurrency.

Still, a larger market capitalization does not by itself demonstrate how frequently RLUSD is used for payments or trade finance. Transaction activity, institutional participation, and the amount of settlement volume generated by real business use cases will be important measures of adoption.

Ripple’s strategy is increasingly focused on combining its payment infrastructure, stablecoin, and blockchain services with established financial institutions. The BNY expansion adds another potential route for institutions to access that ecosystem.

XRP Ledger targets a broader role in capital markets

The XRP Ledger has processed more than 4.6 billion transactions since its launch, with typical transaction settlement times measured in seconds, according to the announcement coverage. These characteristics make it a candidate for applications where participants need fast transfers and predictable settlement.

Ripple and BNY are exploring how the network could support tokenized assets and investment products, as well as payment, settlement, and collateral workflows. Trade finance is one potential application because it involves claims on future payments, working capital, and multiple parties coordinating transactions.

The opportunity extends beyond trade finance. Financial institutions are also exploring tokenized funds and other blockchain-based representations of traditional assets.

Altcoin Buzz previously covered BlackRock, SBI Holdings, and Startale’s exploration of tokenized funds linked with a yen stablecoin, another example of traditional financial firms examining how tokenized assets could connect with digital payment infrastructure.

These initiatives remain distinct, but they reflect a shared direction: making tokenized assets usable within financial processes rather than treating issuance on a blockchain as the end goal.

For the XRP Ledger, broader institutional use could create additional activity on the network. However, the commercial significance will depend on whether projects progress beyond exploration and generate sustained transaction volume.

What the partnership means for XRP

BNY’s decision to support XRP custody is a meaningful development for institutional access to the asset. It gives eligible clients a route to hold XRP through a major financial institution rather than relying exclusively on crypto-native custody providers.

But custody support should not be confused with a commitment to buy XRP, use it as trade-finance collateral, or settle every transaction through the token. Institutions can custody an asset without using it extensively, and the announced trade-finance work also involves RLUSD and the XRP Ledger’s infrastructure.

The potential implications for XRP therefore depend on how the partnership develops. If institutions begin using XRPL for more payment and settlement activity, that could increase the network’s relevance. The effect on demand for XRP itself will depend on the design of those transactions and the role the token plays in them.

The announcement is best viewed as an expansion of institutional infrastructure, not as proof of immediate new demand for XRP.

What to watch next

Three developments will help show whether the expanded relationship produces measurable adoption.

First, watch for details on when eligible BNY clients can access XRP and RLUSD custody and whether direct RLUSD minting and redemption become available under defined operating arrangements.

Second, look for concrete milestones from the Ripple-C2FO trade-finance initiative. Details on participating suppliers, eligible receivables, settlement flows, and production deployment would help establish whether the project can deliver faster access to working capital.

Finally, monitor actual usage of RLUSD and the XRP Ledger in institutional payment and settlement workflows. Growth in market capitalization or the number of partnerships can signal interest, but recurring activity provides stronger evidence that the technology is being used in practice.

Ripple’s expanded relationship with BNY brings custody and potential tokenized trade finance closer together within an established financial framework. The next test is whether these capabilities translate into live services that businesses and institutions use at scale.
