Cardano Builds Through the Bear Market as Programmable Tokens and Midnight Put ADA in Focus
Cardano is advancing its scaling roadmap, bringing programmable tokens to mainnet, and expanding its privacy ecosystem through Midnight. But with ADA near $0.19, the network still needs to turn technical progress into stronger adoption and demand.

Cardano is pushing ahead with major network upgrades, programmable tokens, and privacy-focused development even as ADA trades near $0.19. The latest developments could strengthen its long-term ecosystem, but the market has yet to reflect that progress.
Cardano (ADA) is facing a familiar disconnect: development continues while its token struggles to regain momentum. The network is advancing its scaling roadmap, bringing programmable tokens to mainnet, and expanding its connection with the Midnight privacy ecosystem.
These developments are giving the Cardano community reasons to focus on the network's long-term direction. However, stronger infrastructure does not automatically translate into higher token demand. ADA still needs more users, applications, and capital flowing through its ecosystem.
Cardano's Dijkstra Upgrade Targets Network Scaling
One of Cardano's major upcoming developments is the Dijkstra era, a phased protocol upgrade designed to improve network capacity and transaction settlement.
The first phase is expected to introduce Linear Leios, a scaling approach intended to increase transaction throughput by changing how Cardano produces and processes blocks. It will also bring nested transactions, allowing one transaction to cover fees or collateral for other transactions.
A later phase is expected to introduce Ouroboros Peras, which aims to improve transaction settlement speed. These changes are intended to make Cardano more capable of supporting applications that require higher throughput and faster confirmation.
The upgrade is still progressing through its development and governance process. Cardano's roadmap identifies late 2026 as a target for the first phase's development work, while the broader rollout remains dependent on readiness and network approval. Cardano's Dijkstra roadmap outlines the planned changes.
Cardano's scaling work has already produced encouraging test results. A September test of the Leios upgrade reached approximately 1,000 transactions per second, although the testing conditions have not been fully disclosed. That means the result should be treated as a development milestone rather than a confirmed mainnet performance figure.

CIP-0113 Brings Programmable Tokens to Cardano Mainnet
Another important development is CIP-0113, Cardano's programmable asset token standard, which went live on mainnet on October 7.
The standard allows issuers to embed compliance requirements directly into tokens. These can include Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, anti-money laundering (AML) rules, sanctions screening, transfer restrictions, and the ability to freeze or seize assets under defined conditions.
This could be useful for institutions issuing tokenized financial products such as stablecoins, funds, bonds, and securities. Instead of relying entirely on external systems to enforce restrictions, issuers can build relevant rules into the asset's transfer logic.
The development also received recognition from the Swiss Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA). The association recognized CIP-0113 as a smart-contract equivalent to its CMTAT framework for certification purposes. This could help support the issuance and certification of compliant ledger-based securities under Swiss standards.
Importantly, programmable tokens remain native Cardano assets built on its Extended UTXO model. This allows wallets, explorers, and applications to handle them like other native tokens while the compliance logic travels with the asset.
The standard launched with support from ecosystem tools including Eternl, GeroWallet, CardanoScan, and BloxBean. The Cardano Foundation also said that further work on a securities module for regulated financial instruments is planned.
This gives Cardano a more concrete proposition in the real-world asset market. Rather than competing only on transaction costs and speed, the network is also developing tools for institutions that need programmable compliance.
Hydra and Midnight Expand Cardano's Ecosystem
Cardano's scaling strategy also includes Hydra, its Layer 2 scaling solution. Hydra is designed to process transactions through off-chain channels, known as Hydra Heads, while using the Cardano mainnet for security and settlement.
Hydra v1 has been described as production-ready, and its use during Midnight's NIGHT token generation event demonstrated one practical application of the technology. The goal is to support faster and more efficient transaction processing for applications that need it.
Midnight is another major part of the ecosystem's development. The privacy-focused network uses zero-knowledge technology and selective disclosure to let users prove specific information without exposing all their underlying data.
Its native NIGHT token has also attracted market attention. On November 2, NIGHT traded around $0.042, with its seven-day performance showing a gain of roughly 15% in the latest available Altcoin Buzz market snapshot.
However, NIGHT's price performance should not be treated as proof of direct demand for ADA. Midnight is connected to the wider Cardano ecosystem, but its token has its own market dynamics.
Altcoin Buzz previously examined the token's rally in Midnight's NIGHT Token Jumps 23% as Privacy Coins Gain Attention. That report also highlighted how broader interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies can influence NIGHT's trading activity.
Cardano DeFi Shows Activity, but TVL Remains a Challenge
Cardano's decentralized finance ecosystem is another area to watch. The network supports decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, stablecoins, and other financial applications.
Data from DefiLlama placed Cardano's total value locked at approximately $54.21 million on November 1. Its stablecoin market capitalization was around $63.73 million, while daily decentralized exchange volume was approximately $830,000.
These figures show that Cardano has an active DeFi ecosystem, but they also highlight the scale of the challenge. Its TVL remains modest compared with larger smart-contract networks, and the latest daily reading showed a decline rather than a clear upward trend.
For ADA, sustained growth in DeFi liquidity could be more meaningful than isolated transaction spikes. More capital in lending markets, exchanges, and stablecoins could support greater network usage and create additional reasons for users to hold and spend ADA.
The key question is whether Cardano's technical upgrades and new token standards can attract applications that generate consistent economic activity.
ADA Trades Near $0.19 Despite Development Progress
ADA has struggled to convert the network's development milestones into a sustained price recovery. The token traded near $0.19 on November 2, remaining far below its 2021 all-time high.

The contrast between development and price performance has become a recurring theme for Cardano. Its community points to continued protocol upgrades, governance activity, and ecosystem development as evidence that the network is still progressing.
Developer activity also offers a useful measure of that progress. One tracker monitoring GitHub activity across blockchain projects placed Cardano among the leading networks, with 457 commits, 112 pull requests, and 35 active developers over its latest 30-day measurement period. It ranked just behind Sui in that tracker, although rankings can differ depending on which repositories and development metrics are included.
There are also signs of on-chain activity. Cardano processed approximately 1.78 million transactions during Epoch 660, its highest five-day transaction count since 2021. However, transaction counts alone do not establish how many users were active or whether the activity came from sustained application demand.
The next challenge is translating these technical and activity milestones into stronger adoption, liquidity, and developer-led products.
Can Cardano's Technical Progress Eventually Benefit ADA?
Cardano is developing several pieces of infrastructure that could matter over the long term. Dijkstra and Leios target scalability, Hydra offers a Layer 2 approach, and CIP-0113 gives the network tools for compliant tokenized assets. Midnight adds a privacy-focused ecosystem that could expand the range of applications connected to Cardano.
Together, these developments give the network a broader technology roadmap than a simple focus on transaction speed.
But the distinction between ecosystem progress and token performance remains important. A successful token standard does not guarantee that institutions will issue assets on Cardano. A scaling upgrade does not automatically bring users, and a rally in NIGHT does not necessarily translate into demand for ADA.
For ADA holders, the next milestones to watch are the progress of Dijkstra, adoption of CIP-0113, growth in Cardano's DeFi liquidity, and whether new applications generate recurring on-chain activity.
Cardano's development pipeline is moving forward. Whether that progress can change the market's view of ADA will depend on what the ecosystem delivers next.
