MetaMask Syncs Wallets Across Devices

MetaMask now lets users sync accounts across devices, simplifying wallet management. No more manual imports or re-naming accounts.

This new feature, called “Backup and Sync,” is active by default for new users. It is also available as an opt-in setting for existing ones. It allows users to back up and sync all accounts tied to the same Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). This works across both MetaMask’s mobile app and browser extension.

One Wallet, Multiple Devices, No Headaches

Before this update, managing MetaMask on more than one device could be frustrating. Users often had to import accounts manually, label them again, and repeat the process whenever they switched phones or laptops. Now, MetaMask does all that work for you.

Here’s how it works: if one device has more accounts than the other, MetaMask detects the difference and automatically syncs the missing accounts. The wallet also syncs account names, prioritizing the most recently updated version. For example, if you rename an account “DeFi Savings” on your phone, that name will automatically appear on your laptop—no need to do it twice.

The sync process happens when you lock or unlock MetaMask, or when you close or reopen the app or browser extension. So, if you make a change on your phone, you’ll see it on your computer once MetaMask reloads.

This upgrade is especially helpful for active crypto users. Imagine a developer managing multiple test wallets, or an investor checking DeFi positions on the go—this update removes friction and saves time.

Privacy Preserved, Control Maintained

A big question with any sync feature is data privacy. MetaMask addressed that concern head-on. All account data is encrypted locally—on your device—before it ever reaches MetaMask’s servers. This means MetaMask doesn’t know who is syncing, which wallets they have, or what they’re doing with them.

According to MetaMask, even synced account names remain private, with no central visibility. That level of privacy keeps user trust intact while still offering a smoother experience. This move also aligns with a larger trend: improving crypto tools for the everyday user. As more people enter the space, ease of use becomes just as important as security.
