A new governance proposal in the Polkadot ecosystem is stirring debate.

The proposal, introduced in early June by a community member known as hippiestank, outlines a year-long strategy to diversify Polkadot’s treasury. The plan involves using a dollar-cost averaging (DCA) method to gradually convert DOT to BTC. Rather than buying Bitcoin all at once, DCA spreads out purchases to manage risk. The BTC would be held as Threshold Bitcoin (tBTC), a non-custodial version of BTC that uses cryptographic technology to remain decentralized and secure.
According to the proposer, the goal is not to chase market trends but to create a stable foundation for Polkadot’s finances. The forum post reads, “This proposal is about risk management and operational continuity, not market timing or speculation.” The idea is to build resilience by holding a widely trusted asset like Bitcoin, which some view as a hedge against market uncertainty.
Community members agree that DOT’s price has struggled, especially in 2025. This has raised questions about whether now is the right time to sell DOT while Bitcoin trades above $100,000. Still, others argue that waiting for “perfect timing” may never come and that diversification should start sooner rather than later.
Reactions have been mixed. While some welcome the idea of a BTC reserve, others question the timing of the move. One common concern is that Polkadot would be selling at the bottom and buying near the top. Yet, supporters of the proposal say that looking at prices alone misses the bigger picture. They argue that Bitcoin offers stability and liquidity that DOT currently lacks.
There is also growing interest in expanding beyond a single asset. Some community voices have suggested that Polkadot look at a broader set of investments rather than relying solely on Bitcoin. This could include stablecoins, other Layer-1 tokens, or even real-world assets brought on-chain.
