White House: Trump to End Capital Gains Tax on BTC

White House: Trump to End Capital Gains Tax on BTC

This policy would mean that every day purchases made with Bitcoin would no longer trigger a taxable event. That includes buying items like coffee, groceries, or airline tickets.

For years, crypto users in the U.S. have been required to report capital gains when using Bitcoin for transactions. Even small ones. This tax rule has made it difficult for Bitcoin to function as a true currency in daily life. Removing that barrier could accelerate mainstream adoption and encourage businesses to accept Bitcoin.

A Big Win for Bitcoin Utility

President Trump’s plan was confirmed during a White House briefing earlier this week. It is being framed as part of a broader effort to support financial freedom and digital innovation. By eliminating the capital gains requirement on Bitcoin payments, the administration hopes to encourage wider use of crypto as a medium of exchange. Not just a speculative asset.

Today, under current IRS guidelines, every time a person spends Bitcoin, they must calculate the value at the time of acquisition and the value at the time of the transaction to determine whether they owe tax. This applies even to something as simple as using Bitcoin to pay for a $3 coffee. If the value of Bitcoin rose since it was purchased, that $3 coffee could trigger a small taxable gain.

Removing this rule would align the U.S. with countries like Germany and Switzerland, provided they meet certain conditions. It also reflects a broader global trend. Treating crypto more like a currency and less like a security.

More About Capital Gains on Bitcoin

Dennis Porter emphasized the need for simpler tax rules on digital assets. He said, “Every state with a capital gains tax should pass a de minimis exemption for Bitcoin and digital asset transactions.”

He argued that Americans should be able to buy a cup of coffee with Bitcoin without having to file a full tax report for the small purchase. Porter’s call highlights growing frustration over complex tax burdens that make everyday crypto use cumbersome and could slow wider adoption.

Every state with a capital gains tax should pass a de minimis exemption for Bitcoin and digital asset transactions. Americas should be able buy a cup of coffee without having to run a full tax report. Imagine if you had to do that every time the dollar gained or lost value.
