Chiliz Meets SEC Crypto Task Force Amid US Reentry Plans

Sports platform Chilliz is working toward a return to the US, according to reports. The blockchain platform met with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on April 22nd, indicating strong interest in returning to the US.

Sources familiar with the matter state that Chilliz’s push for a return is largely boosted by Donald Trump’s crypto-friendly administration. The SEC shared details of its meeting with Chilliz in a news log posted on its website.

According to the publication, Chilliz is planning a return to the U.S. market ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Chilliz is a blockchain platform that focuses on launching fan tokens. So far, the platform has partnered with several football teams, including Barcelona and Manchester City. Also, reports suggest that there’s massive interest from NBA and NFL teams in launching fan tokens pending regulatory clarity.

Fan tokens have been a huge debate in the US, with regulators viewing them as investments. However, in its meeting with the SEC, Chiliz shared a draft letter asking regulators not to classify its fan tokens as securities. The company explained that these tokens simply give fans perks like voting rights and special rewards.

Chilliz suffers decline

Despite its high-profile partnerships across football, esports, and motorsports, Chiliz has experienced a notable downturn in ecosystem activity. Data from DeFiLlama indicates that the platform’s total value locked (TVL) fell sharply from $17.8 million on December 9, 2024, to $6.5 million as of April 22, 2025, representing a 63.5% decline.

Chiliz’s governance token, $CHZ, has also struggled. Data from CoinMarketCap shows the token has dropped by 67% over the past year. However, many believe that clearer regulations on fan tokens could see a revival in fan tokens and the $CHZ price.

Chiliz has built strong ties in the sports world. The platform has partnerships with clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and has invested over $80 million in partnerships with US brands.

What would regulatory clarity mean for fan tokens?

Clearer policies in the U.S. could open the door for NBA and NFL teams to explore fan token offerings. Also, regulatory clarity would help define whether these tokens are considered securities or simply digital engagement tools. This would enable sports platforms to partner with the likes of Chilliz without fears of legal repercussions.

NBA and NFL teams will benefit the most from this, as both leagues are often searching for new revenue streams.
