Hunter Biden LAPTOP memecoin crashes 98% after explosive launch on Base

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP memecoin suffered a brutal collapse shortly after launching on Base, falling as much as 98% from its opening peak as thin liquidity and automated trading intensified the token’s extreme volatility.

The token initially surged to around $190.81 within minutes, briefly giving LAPTOP a market capitalization of hundreds of millions of dollars before the price collapsed to roughly $3.70. The move exposed how quickly a newly launched token can reach enormous headline valuations when its available liquidity is only a fraction of that figure.

The LAPTOP team blamed sniper bots and insufficient initial liquidity for the sharp reversal, while early blockchain data showed that some traders were left with six-figure losses.

Project Blames Sniper Bots and Thin Liquidity

The LAPTOP team attributed the collapse primarily to the structure of the launch.

According to the project, the token entered the market with strong demand but insufficient liquidity to absorb the rush of automated traders.

Sniper bots are automated programs designed to detect newly launched tokens and execute trades within seconds. Their speed allows them to buy before many ordinary traders can access a new market, potentially contributing to rapid price spikes and reversals.

The LAPTOP team said it plans to deploy an additional 4 million tokens, equivalent to 0.4% of the total supply, to incentivize liquidity on Aerodrome pools beginning September 10.

The move is intended to deepen liquidity and make the market less vulnerable to the extreme price movements seen immediately after launch.

Early Traders Face Six-Figure Losses

Blockchain analytics provided another view of the launch.

According to data from Nansen, the first 24 hours produced 46,675 buy transactions compared with 16,038 sells, involving approximately 20,085 unique buyers and 8,714 sellers.

Most buyers had not yet sold their LAPTOP holdings when the data was collected.

Several individual wallets suffered particularly large losses. One wallet had realized losses of approximately $171,000 while holding another $27,900 in unrealized losses. Another wallet that purchased roughly 28,400 LAPTOP without selling was down approximately $118,000.

Not every trader lost money. One address that bought approximately 49,700 LAPTOP was sitting on an unrealized gain of roughly $13,000 at the time of the snapshot.

The figures illustrate the extreme difference between entering near the beginning of a memecoin launch and buying after its initial price explosion.

Huge Market Cap Did Not Mean Deep Liquidity

The LAPTOP launch also demonstrates why market capitalization can be misleading for newly launched tokens.

Nansen estimated LAPTOP's market capitalization at approximately $720 million and its fully diluted valuation at around $2.1 billion even after the crash.

Those figures can look enormous compared with the amount of capital actually available in liquidity pools.

The difference became even more extreme during the initial launch. Arkham data cited by Quartz showed that LAPTOP's fully diluted valuation briefly reached approximately $144 billion, despite a liquidity pool containing only about $48,000 at that point.

This does not mean $144 billion entered the token. Instead, the quoted price of a small amount of available liquidity was effectively being applied across the token's total supply.

That is why newly launched memecoin valuations should be viewed cautiously, particularly when liquidity is still measured in only a few million dollars or less.

LAPTOP Team Rejects Insider-Advantage Claims

The project has pushed back against suggestions that insiders had a structural advantage over public buyers.

The team said there was no presale and no allocations for investors, influencers or key opinion leaders. It also said the contract address, token allocation, security audit and other disclosures were published before trading began.

The project argues that participants had access to the same publicly available information before launch.

LAPTOP's official website currently lists a 1 billion token supply, with 35% unlocked at token generation. The allocation includes 30% for founders, 30% tied to predictions, 10% for the initial airdrop, 10% for a future airdrop, 10% for liquidity, 5% for the foundation treasury and 5% for charity.

The founders 30% allocation is subject to a six-month lock and a two-year vesting period, according to the project.

Aerodrome Becomes Central to the Recovery Plan

Aerodrome has become an important part of LAPTOP's post-launch liquidity strategy.

The token already trades through Aerodrome on Base, alongside other decentralized exchanges and trading venues. Current market data shows LAPTOP trading across multiple Base-based pools, including Aerodrome and Uniswap.

The team's plan to add 4 million LAPTOP tokens to liquidity incentives could therefore become an important test for the token's recovery.

Deeper liquidity would not necessarily prevent another price decline, but it could reduce the extent to which individual trades move the market.

What Happens Next for LAPTOP?

The immediate focus will be on whether the project's planned liquidity incentives stabilize trading on Aerodrome.

The team also needs to demonstrate that its tokenomics can support demand beyond the initial attention generated by Hunter Biden's involvement.

For now, LAPTOP remains an extremely volatile memecoin whose first trading session produced both extraordinary gains and six-figure losses.

Its collapse from roughly $190 to below $4 shows how quickly a thinly traded token can move when automated traders, speculative demand and limited liquidity collide.

Whether LAPTOP can recover will depend less on its launch-day headline valuation and more on whether it can develop deeper liquidity and sustained market participation.
