Tesla CEO and X (formerly Twitter) CEO Elon Musk quietly but controversially removed crypto-related emojis from the social media platform, sparking speculations among crypto users.
Musk, a known lover of memecoin, Dogecoin, did not announce the removal or provide any explanation behind the action. Crypto emojis have been available on X for the last four years. The social media platform is known for housing thousands of crypto communities.
On Friday, July 25th, crypto users complained that they could not view emojis while posting “#bitcoin” on the platform. Later, others noticed that the brand pictures for the hashtags #bnbchain and #cryptocom, which also displayed emojis, had been removed.
The missing emojis sparked massive reactions within the crypto community. Eleonor Genova, head of communications at Nexo, remarked that “freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental reasons many of us embraced Bitcoin. Though seemingly small, the Bitcoin emoji represents a grand idea, much like the Peace sign, which played a role in ending wars.”
Genova believes the crypto community needs a “universal digital symbol.” She explained that it was inexcusable that there are several emojis associated with money and dollars but none for a group of people who have “managed to transform global economics within just 15 years” while facing “years of scrutiny.”
Bad Timing?
X’s decision to remove crypto-related emojis comes amidst the highly anticipated Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. The conference featured some of the most prominent crypto executives. The highlight of the event was former US President Donald Trump’s address to the eager Bitcoin crowd on the 27th.

Trump, who is gunning for a second stint at the White House, pledged to make crypto a huge part of his campaign if elected. The businessman promised to fire SEC chair Gary Gensler on “day one” if elected. Gensler has famously battled with several crypto firms and executives, branding most altcoins as securities.
Trump further promised to establish a Bitcoin and crypto presidential advisory council. He told the crowd, “The moment I’m sworn in, the persecution stops and the weaponization ends against your industry. I will appoint a new SEC chairman who believes that America should build the future, not block the future.”
Furthermore, Trump noted that the Presidential Advisory Council would establish crypto policies within 100 days of his taking office. Interestingly, the Republican candidate pledged to halt any plans for a US CBDC (central bank digital currency).
Trump’s speech appeared to have impressed some part of the Bitcoin crowd. However, Bitcoin’s price didn’t soar after the speech as many had expected, down 1.72% from before the speech.
