Owning and controlling your personal data is a fundamental human right. However, sometimes governments can overreach with your privacy and how they use your information. They can do this in many areas. In the crypto space, we can see this with KYC procedures. Or how about up-and-coming CBDC’s? These are Central Bank Digital Currencies, controlled by governments. That’s where DOP or the Data Ownership Protocol comes into play. Their testnet is now live as of December 11th.

So, let’s take a closer look at DOP, or the Data Ownership Protocol. By using their testnet, you qualify for their airdrop.

What Is DOP, the DATA Ownership Protocol?

DOP redefines data ownership. The platform lets you control which online activities you make public. It gives you the tools to balance your on-chain privacy and transparency of your data. For example, you control the online transactions that you want to make public. This helps newcomers build trust in crypto’s potential uses.

DOP is a dApp built on top of Ethereum. It works with zero knowledge (zk) roll-ups. Remember, zk technology is when you can prove something without revealing crucial information. So, for example, you can interact with dApps and liquidity pools on Ethereum. However, you control how much information you reveal.

Owning the native DOP token, after its launch, grants you governance rights. In other words, you can decide on the platform’s future direction. Now, the DOP testnet is ready. This asks for heavy testing, so the inevitable mainnet is battle-proven when it launches. As a bonus, you qualify for an airdrop if you explore their testnet.

What Is the DOP Testnet?

The testnet design is to showcase the incredible capabilities of DOP’s technology. It starts with phase one; Private transactions. Here are some features that the testnet will offer. For instance,

Claim your DOP testnet tokens

Without testnet tokens, there’s no testing possible. That’s why the team commits and distributes testnet tokens. Testnet participants will be eligible for approximately 1% of the total supply of DOP. You can return to the testnet website to claim your reward through vesting. They have a 2-year vesting period with monthly claims. This also shows their commitment to early supporters for potential rewards. Also, no one (neither the team nor you) can pump and dump. Their coins vest just like yours. Furthermore, it’s a free-to-use testnet: No gas fees will be incurred.

A user-friendly experience

The team designed the testnet to be user-friendly. It’s easy to use and intuitive. The DOP team wants everyone to experiment and understand their tech with ease. The testnet operates on the Sepolia testnet. It will take around 10 minutes to complete tasks. This is a secure testnet environment. You will need to set up a new DOP wallet. This is an easy task and the first thing you’re asked to do.

  • Set up a password
  • Copy the seed or recovery phrase.
  • Copy and put the private key in a secure place.
  • Connect your external EVM wallet. This is where you will receive your future testing rewards. So, make sure to complete all the tasks. However, note that rewards are not immediate. Only eligible testers will receive them after the official launch of the DOP token in early 2024.

So I know this can sound confusing with 2 wallets but you will be using your newly formed DOP wallet for the testnet transactions and your current MetaMask wallet to receive the mainnet rewards later. This is how the team knows you earned the tokens by trying the testnet.

You can only complete tasks once. For a desktop version, use the Chrome extension and your MetaMask wallet. It’s MetaMask ONLY for now. For your mobile, it’s not ready yet but it will be for MetaMask users soon. In case there’s an issue with step 5, “Encrypt Assets,” hit the refresh button. That’s if your assets don’t appear in the token selection field. It usually takes a few seconds for your assets to appear.

User Feedback and Bug Detection

The team wants and needs your feedback. That’s how they will know if the testnet works or not. Let them know about any bugs or other issues you encounter.

All features are already functioning on their mainnet. However, they use the testnet data to fine-tune everything. We like this approach of safety first.

DOP

Testnet Duration

The testnet will end during Q1 2024. Currently, there’s no exact date, but the team will reveal this soon. Both testnet and mainnet are running ahead of schedule per their last roadmap.

What Is the Purpose of the Testnet?

The current testnet is only offering Phase 1. This tests the transaction engine. It includes disclosed and undisclosed transactions. The team will reveal more features in the future. For example, Phase 2 is about flexible privacy options. What we are seeing here, is only the beginning.

This testnet will also have a claiming feature. In other words, you can claim the DOP tokens that you earned by testing. Be aware of your Sybil and farming attempts. In other words, complete the testnet tasks only once, with one wallet. The team will note any duplicate wallet and IP addresses. This will guarantee a fair and accurate testnet process.

Conclusion

DOP or the Data Ownership Protocol is launchiing their incentivized testnet. This will run until Q1, 2024. The exact end date is TBA. The current Phase 1 tests the transaction engine. It includes 7 easy tasks. More tasks and features will follow. With your help, your ETH transactions will now let you control how much of your information is posted in public. And the more control you have over your information, the better.

Try the testnet today.
